Greetings to my dear and respected mother, father, brother Nirbhail Singh, sister-in- law, brother Bhupinder Singh, sister-in-law (Sukh), sister Jass, townspeople, all relatives, dear children – nephew Mandeep Singh, Mathra Singh, Sharanjit Singh, Kanwal, Kinder, Harman, Simar, Gopi, Gurbhej Singh Sonu, and to the congregation of the Guru; I bid you all the Guru’s Fateh!
The Khalsa belongs to Waheguru!
To Waheguru belongs victory!
By the grace of the Guru we are in ever-rising high spirits. We ask the Guru for the Panth and you all to be blessed with high spirits.
Dear sister Jass, I have received your love-filled letter to me in which father has sent his love through words. I will try to write this letter to the point because I am nearly out of pages on which to write; even these two pages have been procured through some strife. For six hours we did not accept our curfew and close – just to gain this paper on which to write.
I have just finished reciting Gurbani as I sit to write this letter. Brother Sukhdev is lying in front of me in his cell reading the newspaper. We instructed for a telegram to be sent requesting for you to come and meet us – I do not know if it was even sent as today was holiday for the occasion of Dussehra. Curfew and close came a little earlier than usual on this account, however we have only ever gone willingly of our own volition. The last two weeks have been quite hot and so our curfew has been four or five hours later than expected, at around eleven o’clock. Nobody dared to come and ask us to return to our cells and accept the time to close! We return ourselves without any fuss, firstly because we consider the lot of the jail staff who were usually quite hungry and thirsty having watched us throughout the day, and secondly because we really felt the need to sleep. The superintendent would sit and wait along with his staff until we returned.
We have written a letter to our brothers Kuki and Sukhi, and to the Khalsa Panth as a whole (attached with this letter). Please make a copy and send it by registered mail to them. Please keep the original letter safe yourselves. Please send two Kesri-coloured turbans to brothers Kuki and Sukhi, and two to brothers Manjit Singh and Rajinder Singh in England, via parcel delivery on our behalf. I will provide one turban here to send to Canada for Baba Ranjit Singh, and a turban to give to brother Ajit Singh Khalihra.
Dear esteemed mother, I will give you my clothes when we meet; from these please give a blue-coloured pair of jeans, a shirt of his choosing, a turban and a pair of boots to brother Inderjit Singh; a shirt and a turban to Bhupinder Singh; a shirt and a turban to brother Nirbhail Singh; a shirt to uncle Gurnam Singh Atwal but on the condition that they will take Amrit; for uncle Piara Singh I will give a Boski kurta-pyjama from here. For my nieces Kanwal and Kinder, I request that a salwaar-kameez suit is bought and tailored for them when they come to be wed. I wish I could send something for everyone, but this is beyond of my reach now. Please keep in your possession mother and father, the trousers that were given to me by brother Panjwar as well as a shirt. Please distribute the rest of my clothing. If the blue trousers you bought me from Delhi fit brother Sukhchain Singh then please give it to him. Please have a salwaar-kameez suit bought and tailored for sisters Jass and Binder, sisters-in-law Nirmal and Sukh, and yourself mother, from us. I have previously sent gifts for Harman, Simar, Mathra, Mandeep, Bubb, and Raman, however if they insist they should get something, then on their wedding days please provide them with whatever they ask for on my behalf. It may be that this shirt I will ask you to give to brother Paramjit Singh Panjwar; if there is anything further to give to somebody, I will tell you when we meet.
I have also received sister Kuku’s wedding invitation. What should I send for sister Kuku? I think I will gift something for her when we meet. Another problem has arisen in that we cannot order goods from the market any more, otherwise I wouldn’t have offended anyone and at the very least would have sent gifts of pens. With this in mind, nobody should be upset that they have not received anything. Sister Ruby, you received the tracksuit – what more could you want? If I possibly could have, I would have of course sent something more to my sister. I already provided the shirt from brother Panjwar to my maternal uncle. To sisters Sarabjit Kaur, Davinder Kaur, Pal, brother Fauji, nephews and the whole family, I bid you the Guru’s Fateh.
