Bhai Tejpal Singh was born on 31st August 1965, from the blessed womb of his mother, Mata Surjit Kaur and in the house of father, Sardar Hazara Singh, in the village of Bhaku Majra, Ropar. He was the youngest of five children – Bhai Dhian Singh, Bhai Gian Singh, Bibi Harbans Kaur, Bibi Rajinder Kaur and Bhai Tejpal Singh. Bhai Sahib studied up to the 12th grade and went on to work at a mechanic workshop. During his student years, he served as the Press Secretary for the Sikh Students Federation. Bhai Tejpal Singh was well-versed and knowledgeable about the current political state of affairs in Punjab. His support for the Sikh nation and the fight against injustice inflicted by the Indian State was unwavering.

 

When Bhai Sahib was working his day job, the armed struggle was in full force across Punjab. The Jhujaru Singhs were working collaboratively to target perpetrators of 1984 and eliminate them. Beyond this, the Punjab Police had become deeply corrupt, and Operation Woodrose saw thousands of Sikhs, especially young Sikh males, being kidnapped and killed in fake encounters. The Jhujaru Singhs then launched a campaign to eliminate these informants and police inspectors spearheading the operation. This led to the assassination of the Chief Minister of Punjab, CM Beanta. Some of the most heinous police officers at the time included – DGP KPS Gill, DSP Ajit Singh Sandhu, DSP Swaran Singh Ghotna, DSP Gurbachan Singh, Inspector Suba Singh, Inspector Inderjit Singh, among many others.

 

During the armed movement, Bhai Tejpal Singh became close with Jhujaru Singhs from the Babbar Khalsa organisation. He served alongside them anonymously while still working his day job. Eventually, the police discovered his involvement, and it wasn’t long before he was arrested. He was brutally tortured and kept in jail for up to two months without any charges or cases, and was then released. He knew, however, that he would remain under continuous threat from the police as well as informants who had infiltrated many Jhujaru organisations.

 

On the day of his martyrdom, it is known that Daljit Dalli was the informant who betrayed Bhai Tejpal Singh and Bhai Baldev Singh to the police. In Chandigarh, at a local paper mill near sector 288-1264, the police caught both Jhujaru Singhs and surrounded the area. Bhai Baldev Singh was shot in the middle of his forehead by the police. A heavy crossfire ensued. Bhai Tejpal Singh fought until his last breath, ultimately attaining Shaheedi, with his body riddled with bullets. These great warriors believed wholeheartedly in the cause of Khalistan and gave their lives for Guru-Panth.
