Shaheed Bhai Fhuman Singh Nihalke

This is the story of two brothers Bhai Sukhmandir Singh and Bhai Fhuman Singh from the village of Nihalke, Makhu. At the time of martyrdom, Bhai Sukhmandir Singh was twenty years of age and Bhai Fhuman Singh was forty years of age. Both were born from the blessed womb of mother, Mata Gulab Kaur and father, Sardar Harnam Singh. They were a family of eleven children.

 

It was December 1991 and near to the time of his Shaheedi, Bhai Fhuman Singh was at a hideout location in the village of Sudhan, Makhu. An informant had tipped off this information to the Punjab police that Jhujaru Singhs were hiding at this place. It was not long that the police had completely surrounded the area. Upon realising the police siege, the Jhujaru Singhs ran into the nearest Sugarcane fields. The Jhujaru Singhs did have a relative amount of ammunition on them. And so, they began to fire and retaliate against the police. A firing battle ensued for up to 5 hours.

 

Bhai Fhuman attained Shaheedi during this battle of fire along with two other Singhs, Bhai Balraj Singh and another name unknown (both from the region of Makhu). The police took all the bodies to the crematorium in Zira and cremated the Shaheed Singh’s bodies in the presence of their families. Bhai Fhuman Singh’s family then completed the religious ceremony at the home village attended by many.

 

Eight days later (December 1991), Bhai Fhuman Singh’s brother, Bhai Sukhmandir Singh attained Shaheedi. He was in the village of Talwandi Sobha Singh at a hideout place and was holding on to a large amount of cash. He was due to cross the border into Pakistan to buy firearms and ammunition. Unfortunately, he was betrayed by the family he was staying with due to greed. They saw the money and decided to take the money and tout him to the police. The family put sleeping pills into his food and when he fell asleep, they informed the police. The police captured and killed him in a fake encounter. The family were informed and attended his funeral arranged by the police in the village of Patti.

 

Both, Shaheed Bhai Fhuman Singh Nihalke and Shaheed Bhai Sukhmandir Singh Nihalke had joined the Jhujaru Singhs of Khalistan Liberation Force under the command of Bhai Nishan Singh Makhu.
