The list of martyred Sikh youths in the current Sikh struggle started by Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale is very long. Bhai Nirmal Singh is also one of them. Bhai Nirmal Singh was born in the house of Sardar Kehar Singh and from the blessed womb of Mata Gurdev Kaur in a simple farmer’s family in village Smalsar in 1957. Bhai Nirmal Singh had a slender body and open nature from his childhood. Bhai Nirmal Singh has two brothers and three sisters. Bhai Nirmal Singh was only thirteen or fourteen years old when both his father, Sardar Kehar Singh’s legs were broken in a car accident and then he could not walk properly for the rest of his life. In this way, the entire responsibility of the household chores fell on Bhai Nirmal Singh. Bhai Nirmal Singh nurtured his family through hard work and made Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj’s principle of hard work a part of his life. Generally, the neighbouring villagers used to say that even three men could not do as much work as Bhai Nirmal Singh. At that time, Bhai Nirmal Singh’s diet was also equal to three men.

 

With the blessings of Sikh Guru, Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale started the Dharam Yudh Morcha in Punjab and Bhai Nirmal Singh took Amrit from the Panj Pyare, he started leading a life of selfless service and meditation. He spent many precious years of his life in the jails of Faridkot and Sangrur during the Sikh struggle. He served the Sikh community with dedication and selfless spirit. As a soldier of the Sikh Students Federation, he pursued the cases of Jhujaru Singhs, delivered rations to them in jails and their families. He had memorized many Sikh prayers and kept reciting them all the time. He enjoyed the warmth of the company of many great men like Baba Joginder Singh Ji Khalsa, Bhai Gurdev Singh Kaunke, Baba Thakur Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, Baba Charan Singh Ji Kar Seva Wala. According to some Gurmukh lovers, Bhai Nirmal Singh’s heart always echoed with the name of God. Many colleagues also saw him chanting ‘Waheguru’ while sleeping.

 

In year 1989, Bhai Nirmal Singh took part in the election. Those candidates whose securities were forfeited in the 1989 polls became jealous of Bhai Nirmal Singh and many secret conspiracies were hatched against him. The result of these conspiracies was that he became a victim of the fratricidal war on the night of 18th March 1990. In this way, Bhai Nirmal Singh became a victim of those Jhujaru heroes for whose sake he had been serving day and night with selfless spirit. He left behind his wife, two daughters and one son. Sikhs such as, Baba Thakur Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, Baba Joginder Singh Ji Khalsa, Bhai Gurdev Singh Kaunke, Baba Charan Singh Ji Kar Seva Wala strongly condemned his murder. After the release, Bhai Simranjit Singh Maan had visited the family house several times and honoured the family. Bhai Nirmal Singh’s family is also contributing to the rise of Khalsa Panth under the leadership of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar).
