Shaheed Bhai Malkit Singh Pappu Khan

Born into a Muslim family, a Jhujaru of the Babbar Khalsa, who fought in the Khalistani movement, Shaheed Bhai Malkit Singh alias Pappu Khan was born in the year 1962, in the house of Sardar Amar Singh alias Muhammad Ali and from the blessed womb of Mata Raj Kaur in village Budha Bhaura, Post Office Phool Khurd, District Ropar. Bhai Sahib was the second eldest of 5 children, Bhai Surjit Malava, Bhai Malkit Singh (Shaheed), Bhai Karam Singh, Bibi Karamjit Kaur and Bibi Surinder Kaur. He passed his 10th from Khalsa High School, Ropar. Bhai Sahib’s family are followers of Islam, but at home they live the culture of Sikhs/Sardars. Bhai Sahib was the only Muslim family in the village and this family went to Gurdwara Sahib and also would recite Sri Sukhmani Sahib. Bhai Sahib’s Nikah (marriage) was done with Bibi Sarabjit Kaur (daughter of Lal Deen, resident of village Libra, near Khanna) and a child was born in their house Harmanpreet Singh.

 

After the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib, the armed for the freedom of Khalistan began. Bhai Sahib joined Malwa zone’s Babbar Khalsa under the command of Bhai Balwinder Singh Jattana, Bhai Charanjit Singh Channa and Bhai Harmeet Singh Bhauwal, Bhai Sahib secretly carried out many Jhujaru actions and fulfilled the duty of being a true Muslim and Punjabi. Just as Pir Budhu Shah gave his support to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj in the battle of Bhagnani along with his sons and disciples. Similarly, Bhai Sahib continued to help the Jhujaru Singhs in every way and also participated in some actions. His family rendered immense service to the Singhs by serving them food and water and providing them with shelter. Bhai Sahib was highly respected in the area, he settled many daughters in their in-law’s home and solved many problems of the village due to which people still remember him today.

 

When the police got wind of his Jhujaru activities, finally on 11th March 1992, under the command of Inspector Avtar Singh and Sub-Inspector Tejinder Singh, the police arrested Bhai Malkit Singh alias Pappu Khan from his house and on the same day the police arrested Bhai Dalbir Singh from village Bhauwal. Then the police tortured both of these Singhs in the CIA staff of Ropar, but these heroes did not reveal a single secret of the Jhujaru Singhs from their mouths. It was during the blind torture Bhai Malkit Singh alias Pappu Khan attained martyrdom. Then the police showed a false encounter in the newspaper near Marinda calling Bhai Dalbir Singh Bhauwal unidentified but did not reveal any information about Bhai Malkit Singh alias Pappu Khan. His wife and father kept going to the CIA staff of Ropar again and again but the oppressors did not listen to them, they did not even tell them that Bhai Sahib was made Shaheed. 

 

When the case was filed by the family into the disappearance of Bhai Sahib, the policemen threatened the family and tried to pressure them by saying, “You should say in the court that we did not pick up Malkit Singh, in return we will give you 2 Lakh Rupees.” The families tried hard to get justice, but government of India was not going to give justice to its minorities.
