Shaheed Bhai Lakhbir Singh Checker was born on 6th July 1968, from the blessed womb of Mata Bachan Kaur and in the house of Sardar Sohan Singh in village Valtoha (Patti Matte Ki-Theh Sarhali), Tehsil Patti, District Sri Amritsar (now Tarn Taran). Here is the detail of Sardar Bachan Singh’s 10 children: Bhai Balwinder Singh, Bhai Darshan Singh Gogi (Shaheed), Bhai Lakhbir Singh Checker (Shaheed), Bhai Sukhwant Singh, Bhai Charanjit Singh, Bibi Mahinder Kaur, Bibi Shinder Kaur, Bibi Veer Kaur, Bibi Darshan Kaur and Bibi Paramjit Kaur. Bhai Sahib’s father, Sardar Sohan Singh used to do farming, Bhai Sahib studied up to 12th standard and then joined the Home Guard Police.
Seeing the atrocities being committed on the families of the Jhujaru Singhs, Bhai Sahib’s conscious awoke and along with 4 other colleague police officers, Bhai Pargat Singh Pagga Tank (Valtoha), Bhai Jaswinder Singh Kala Toriyan (Valtoha), Bhai Sukhdev Singh alias Bhai Sukha (Valtoha) and Bhai Roop Singh Valtoha joined the Sikh struggle after looting the police weapons (SRL rifles). Bhai Sahib joined the Sikh struggle under the leadership of Jhujaru, Bhai Partap Singh Sarpanch alias Taba.
On 19th January 1991, Bhai Lakhbir Singh Checker, Bhai Jaswinder Singh Kala Toriyan (Valtoha), Bhai Sukhdev Singh alias Bhai Sukha (Valtoha), Bhai Kulwant Singh Kala (Nihal Ke), Bhai Bhajan Singh (Nihal Ke) and Bhai Ravinder Singh Bhola (Doctor) were all testing at a house in village Nihal Ke, near Harike of Firozpur district. There the police, BSF and CRPF surrounded the Jhujaru Singhs. A fierce battle was being fought by the Jhujaru Singhs, it is said that the encounter lasted 36 hours. All the Jhujaru Singh’s fought till the last bullet and their last breath, eventually attaining martyrdom. The police came and told the family that Bhai Checker had been killed.
