Shaheed Bhai Kulbir Singh Mal

Shaheed Bhai Kulbir Singh Mal was born in the house of Sardar Khushal Singh and from the blessed womb of Mata Harbans Kaur in the village of Jattana, near Sri Chamkaur Sahib, district Ropar. Here is a list of his six siblings: Bibi Harwinder Kaur, Bhai Gurmeet Singh, Bhai Jaspal Singh, Bhai Balwinder Singh, Bibi Kulwinder Kaur, and the youngest, Bhai Kulbir Singh Mal (Shaheed). Bhai Sahib passed his 12th grade from Khalsa School in Chamkaur Sahib. His father worked for the government in the Tubewell Corporation on the coast of Orissa.

 

After the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib in June 1984, Bhai Sahib became active in the armed struggle through the Babbar Khalsa organisation. During his Jhujaru life, he punished many police informants, black cats and many cruel policemen. When Bhai Sahib was active in the struggle, his brother, Bhai Jaspal Singh suffered a lot of torture at the hands of the Punjab police, he was imprisoned in police stations several times and also spent time in jails. Bhai Kulbir Singh Mal carried every Jhujaru actions assigned by the organisation with dedication.

 

Bhai Jaspal Singh told us that in April 1992, a black cat of the police who came in a van near Gurdwara Sohlakian-Kuralian in Ropar martyred Bhai Kulbir Singh Mal as he was travelling on a bicycle. Bhai Sahib’s body was riddled with bullets. There is a great need to write the story of such neglected Jhujaru Singhs.
