Area Commander of Khalistan Commando Force, Shaheed Bhai Joginder Singh Jindu alias Fauji was born on 25th October 1957 in village Kular near Gardhiwala of district Hoshiarpur. He was born from the blessed womb of Mata Kartar Kaur and in the house of Sardar Meher Singh. Bhai Joginder Singh was the only brother of four sisters, with two elder sisters Bibi Mahinder Kaur, Bibi Gurdeep Kaur and two younger sisters Bibi Daljit Kaur, Bibi Jasveer Kaur. His father used to serve in the army and he was a very honest, brave and good Gursikh. He got his metric education from the secondary school of village Bhane and then started working in agriculture. In the year 1978, Bhai Joginder Singh’s Anand Karaj took place with Bibi Hardev Kaur (resident of village Jhawan, near Tanda, district Hoshiarpur), sister of Shaheed Bhai Daljit Singh Jeeta. Four sons, Mandeep Singh, Sukhbir Singh, Sarabjit Singh and Sukhwinder Singh were born in Bhai Jindu’s house. Bhai Jindu was very strong and courageous. Carrying a quintal sack alone, Bhai Jindu used to go very far. Bhai Sahib received the gift of Amrit from Panj Pyare from Damdami Taksal Jatha at Chownk Mehta. Bhai Jindu used to wake up daily in the early hours of the morning and recite Gurbani regularly and do Waheguru Simran throughout the day. His life was very upright, idealistic and principled.
In June 1984, the tyrants of Delhi sent their army to attacks Sri Darbar Sahib, who destroyed Sri Akaal Takht Sahib with tanks and cannons. Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, the 14th chief of Damdami Taksal, and other warriors of the Sikh nation, were martyred while fighting with the Indian forces. Because of this chaos, Bhai Joginder Singh’s heart was torn apart, his mind was deeply hurt and Bhai Sahib remained silent and kept thinking in his mind that, “What has happened to our nation, the rulers of our own country have dropped us like grains of rice, we were not terrorists or separatists, we were demanding the equal rights. Before the independence of this country, the Hindu leaders had made promises to liberate us all. What crime have we committed that the army attacked Sri Darbar Sahib like Abdali and killed thousands of innocent Singhs and Singhnia.” Bhai Jindu was immersed in deep thoughts and then in November 1984, in the capital Delhi and other states of the country, Sikhs started being killed by Hindus yobs, and here in Punjab, the army was roaming around the villages and Sikhs were being killed in staged encounters every day. Bhai Jindu wanted to stop the oppression of the Indian government somehow, he was looking for such an opportunity and a way from where weapons could be arranged and the perpetrators of the Sikh nation would be taught a lesson according to Khalsa traditions.
After some time, with the blessings of Waheguru, Bhai Jindu met and joined the Jhujaru Singhs. It so happened that one-day Bhai Joginder Singh went to his in-law’s village Jhawan with his wife and there he met Bhai Iqbal Singh Bagha, a famous fighter of Khalistan Commando Force, who was making revolvers at that time and he was considered very expert in this work. After meeting with him, Bhai Jindu returned home with his family, but after a few days, he left home saying that he had work, and then he joined the Sikh struggle alongside his brothers-in-law, Bhai Daljit Singh Jeeta and Bhai Iqbal Singh Bagha. Bhai Jindu met the top Jhujaru Singhs of Khalistan Commando Force, such as Bhai Surinderjit Singh Mallewal, Bhai Swaranjit Singh Bishrampur, Bhai Surinder Singh Shahbazpur and other brave fighters of Khalistan. Together with his Jhujaru brothers, Bhai Jindu started secretly participating in Jhujaru activities. The police soon came to know about his involvement and the started raiding his house every other day. It was at this point, in 1987, Bhai Jindu never returned back home.
After going underground, Bhai Joginder Singh Jindu and Bhai lqbal Singh Bagha went to Bombay and drove trucks there for some time. After Bhai Jindu left Punjab, the police started harassing his wife. One day the police raided Bhai Jindu’s house at night and opened fire on the house. The bullets of the police passed over the head of Bibi Hardev Kaur and their children. The next day, Bibi Hardev Kaur locked the house and went to her family’s house, but even there the police used to raid the house because of her brother, Bhai Daljit Singh Jeeta. Fed up with the oppression of the police, Bibi Hardev Kaur moved around house to house to avoid police harassment. After two months, Bhai Joginder Singh Jindu and Bhai lqbal Singh Bagha returned to Punjab from Bombay.
In those days, Bhai Joginder Singh Jindu, Bhai Jaspal Singh Padda and Bhai Surinderjit Singh Mallewal were staying at a house in village Chandidas. An informant gave this location to the Hoshiarpur police and about 1500 police personnel and CRPF soldiers surrounded the Jhujaru Singhs. The Indian security forces were led by SHO Chhaju Ram. The Singhs started a face-to-face battle with the police, the Singhs tried hard to break the siege and get out, but the siege was not broken. Then Bhai Surinderjit Singh Mallewal said, “This isn’t going to work. I will throw gas bombs and grenades, you should climb over the walls and exit from the back side.” When Bhai Mallewal threw these explosives, there was smoke all over the place, there was chaos, the police and CRPF had many of their soldiers killed in an instant. Turn by turn 2 of the Jhujaru Singhs climbed the wall and escaped, but when Bhai Jindu was about to jump over the wall, he was shot in the leg by a CRPF soldier. Bhai Jindu continued to jump over the wall despite being injured. All 3 Jhujaru Singhs escaped after jumping the wall and giving each other cover fire. The police didn’t have the courage to chase the Singhs, the police retreated and the 3 Singhs walked through the fields for about ten kilometres when Bhai Jindu started feeling dizzy due to loosing so much blood from his leg. Bhai Jindu hadn’t told his Jhujaru brothers that he had been shot in the leg, who were all surprised that if there was anyone else, they could never have run so far being shot in the leg. After reaching their hideout, Bhai Jindu was treated by a doctor, he completely recovered within 10 days.
Once Bhai Jindu along with his companions came to a joint meeting called by the senior command of Jhujaru Singhs at a place near Adampur to decide the next strategy of the struggle, suddenly Indian security forces in their thousands surrounded the area. Bhai Jindu quickly guided all the Jhujaru Singhs out of the back door and he himself walked towards the Indian soldiers and got their attention upon himself. When all the Jhujaru Singhs escaped, the police managed to arrest Bhai Jindu. He told the police, “I am a driver.” Bhai Jindu was wearing a checkered printed material as a turban, due to which the police did not suspect much, but still they took him to the police station for questioning and continued to interrogate him. Bhai Jindu didn’t panic at all and the police let him go. In this way, he very cleverly saved all the Jhujaru Singhs from there without fighting and he also got out of police custody.
One day, Bhai Sahib went to his in-laws to see his children, when the police all of a sudden raided the house and started asking, “Did Joginder Singh did come here?” While Bhai Jindu was sitting on the bed in front of the police men. He suddenly got up and started saying, “Alright Chachi, I’m leaving now.” And he got out of there very easily in front of the eyes of police. The Thanedar was a good person, he kept on asking asked Bhai Jindu’s mother-in-law, Mata Jeet Kaur, “Who was that?” And Mata Jeet Kaur replied, “He is our relative.” But the Thanedar said, “Mata Ji, I recognized him because his face resembled those of these children. I know that Joginder Singh was a very good person and he would not harm anyone without a valid reason. We just came to find out according to our official duty.”
There was a police cat who used to tip off the Singhs to the government and harassed their families a lot. That cat was captured by Bhai Sahib from his in-law’s village Jhawan. Bhai Jindu dragged him to the villages water tubal and beat him so bad that he disclosed all the secrets. This police cat told Bhai Jindu, “We four brothers, all four of us are police cats and work under the command of the SSP of Jalandhar. We give the news of the Jhujaru Singhs to the government, for which we get a big reward, and so far we have killed 23-24 Jhujaru Singhs and like us, the police have left their men in all the villages and cities of Punjab, who disguise themselves as Jhujaru Singhs at night and go to the houses of people that have sympathy for the Sikh struggle and have food there but then at gun point rob those same people and even rape the daughters and sisters of that house. This is done to harm the real Khalistani movement by defaming the real militants and instil hatred towards the Singhs in the hearts of the people.” Fearing death, the police cat talked more about what other bad things the police do through them. Bhai Joginder Singh punished that cat for his sins and killed him on the spot by shooting him with bullets.
Bhai Joginder Singh rendered great service in the freedom struggle of Khalistan. While engaged in armed struggle, Bhai Jindu assassinated many butcher police officers, police cats, touts, informers, traitors and other enemies of the Sikh nation. Bhai Sahib blew up a police vehicle in Jalandhar with a bomb, attacked the police line in Pathankot and also attacked other police station. Bhai Jindu also hacked to pieces a so-called comrade in Mahilpur who spewed a lot of venom against the Sikh struggle, he also had big encounters with the police and CRPF where he always succeeded in breaking the perimeter and escaping. He showed such Khalsa strength to the forces of India that the enemies of Sikhs trembled on hearing his name. Khalistan Commando Force was praised everywhere. To catch him, the police played a lot of tricks, police cats and touts were activated everywhere, his family and relatives were targeted, but Bhai Jindu kept moving towards his target of complete freedom.
Saddened by the oppression of the police, his wife, Bibi Hardev Kaur also went underground with him and started to participate in the Sikh struggle alongside her husband. During the struggle, the Singhs had to spend nights in sugarcane farms. Fighting a guerilla war was not an easy thing, but thanks to the grace of Sikh Gurus, Bhai Jindu continued to fight for the respect of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, to maintain the sanctity of the Gurdwaras and to protect the dignity of daughters and sisters. The police demolished Bhai Jindu’s house, wrecked the fields, took all the furniture of the house to the police station, all the members of the family had become homeless. The police also illegally picked up Bibi Hardev Kaur’s sister, Bibi Balbir Kaur and her husband from their home and took them to ClA staff in Hoshiarpur they were brutally tortured for several days.
One day, the police cats kidnapped the son of a Hindu goldsmith in Dasuya and on the letter pad of the ‘Khalistan Commando Force’ organization, those cats demanded a ransom of three lakh rupees from the family. The Hindu family panicked, they contacted an elderly Sikh man in the area and pleaded to him to save their boy from the Jhujaru Singhs. When that Gursikh looked at the letter pad carefully, he came to know that these signatures are not the real signatures of the Singhs of Khalistan Commando Force, and a police cat has used their name. The old man reassured the Hindu family that it is fake letter and that no Jhujaru Singh has asked for money, this is the work of government police cats and touts. That elderly man contacted the Singhs and made them aware of the entire situation. Lieutenant General Bhai Iqbal Singh Bagha assigned Bhai Joginder Singh the responsibility of finding the police cats responsible for this and freeing the boy of the Hindu family from them. Bhai Joginder Singh went to punish the police cats in their village. For some reason, Bhai Jindu stashed his assault rifle on the way and went on with only his revolver. When Bhai Jindu saw the police cats and fierce battle started, in which the police cats ran away from the village. Bhai Jindu searched for the police cats for a week and then found out that they were hiding in the village of Haler-Ghogra.
On 26th May 1992, Bhai Joginder Singh Jindu, Bhai lqbal Singh Bagha, Bhai Onkar Singh Phela and Bhai Swaranjit Singh Bishrampur went to the village of Haler-Ghogra (near Hajipur). After doing their reconnaissance, the Singhs took rest at someone’s house in the village. Bhai Joginder Singh Jindu sent Bhai lqbal Singh Bagha and Bhai Swaranjit Singh Bishrampur to get the assault which were stashed at nearby villages. Bhai Onkar Singh had a high fever, Bhai Jindu kept him behind with him. In the house where Bhai Jindu was staying, the owner of that house locked the door of Singh’s room from outside and informed the police. About 700 heavy police force and CRPF surrounded both Jhujaru Singhs. It was afternoon time, the police threw a grenade on the room and the wall of the room collapsed. There was no sound of any kind from inside and the police thought that the Jhujaru Singhs were killed by the grenade attack. Because of this, when the police directly entered the room, Bhai Joginder Singh who was sitting inside opened fire at the police and CRPF killing 25 soldiers in one blow. The Singhs fought fiercely with the rest of the Indian soldiers and inflicted heavy losses on the police force too. When the Singhs ran out of ammunition, both Singhs (Bhai Joginder Singh Jindu and Bhai Onkar Singh) attained martyrdom by consuming cyanide capsules. Later the police took the bodies of the martyred Singhs out of the room and shot them in the chest to show that they had killed the lions of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj.
In this way, Bhai Joginder Singh attained martyrdom while protecting the Hindus from the police cats. After the martyrdom of Bhai Jindu, CRPF colonel said, “Militant Joginder Singh was not any ordinary man, he excelled in fighting with our forces, it was not only difficult but impossible to defeat him, he was a very skilled militant in using weapons.” The police cremated the martyred bodies of the two Singhs themselves in the Dasuya crematorium.
