Bhai Jaswant Singh Jassa was born on 1st October 1967, from the blessed womb of Mata Jasbir Kaur and in the house of Sardar Ajaib Singh in village Jamarai, near Dera Sahib. Bhai Sahib studied upto 10th class at the government high school in Dera Sahib. Bhai Sahib had a younger brother, Bhai Gurmeet Singh. To study his 11th class, Bhai Sahib took admission at the school of Toor village. It was here, Bhai Sahib became close friends with a known and respected Jhujaru Singh, Bhai Resham Singh Thande.

 

In 1988, few days before the Indian army attacked Sri Darbar Sahib (Operation Black Thunder 2), Bhai Sahib was in the complex with his fellow Jhujaru Singhs, but to carry out a Jhujaru actions, Bhai Sahib left the complex 2 days before the Indian army invaded. It was during this time period, a police informant had Bhai Sahib arrested from a hideout. Bhai Sahib was unarmed at this time. For 15 days, Bhai Sahib was tortured for information by the Punjab police and also the CRPF. Bhai Sahib took on the torture and did not utter a word that would cause the Sikh struggle or the Jhujaru Singhs any damage. The family members managed to get Bhai Sahib released on bail from the Sarhali police station but his body was very weak due to the inhumane torture at the hands of the police.

 

For some time after this, Bhai Sahib stayed at home and helped his father in farming their land. But 6 months after, SHO Swaran of Jandiala police station arrested Bhai Sahib from home, after which he was taken to Mal Mandi interrogation centre and blindly tortured once again. Bhai Sahib was tortured by Thanedar Gurmail Bai, who wanted information on Jhujaru Singhs and their weapons, but like before, Bhai Sahib took on the torture and did not utter a word. In the end, the Punjab police charged Bhai Sahib with 5/6 cases and sent him to Amritsar high security jail. Bhai Sahib was released on bail after 10 long months.

 

Upon being released, Bhai Sahib decided to join the Jhujaru Singhs and fight for freedom rather than continue to being arrested and tortured by the cruel Punjab police. Bhai Sahib joined the Jhujaru Singhs of Khalistan Liberation Force, such as Bhai Resham Singh Thande, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Lalu Ghuman, Bhai Balwinder Singh Jaura and many others. Bhai Sahib was involved in many battles against the Indian security forces and showed great bravery and courage which gave motivation to fellow Jhujaru Singhs to continue to fight the tyrants. The Punjab police harassed Bhai Sahib’s family to force him to surrender, but Bhai Sahib continued to punish the anti-Sikh elements.

 

On 19th April 1990, Bhai Sahib and Bhai Jaswant Singh Sanghna were spotted by an informant in Amritsar, who passed their location to the police. The police rushed to the location in their gypsy’s and pounced on the 2 Jhujaru Singhs. The Jhujaru Singhs were unarmed at this point, but Bhai Sahib fought back and the police constables and as soon as he got a chance, he swallowed a capsule cyanide which resulted in his martyrdom on the spot and his fellow Jhujaru Singh was arrested. It is reported that the arrested Bhai Jaswant Singh Sanghna was later killed in a fake encounter by the police.
