Shaheed Bhai Jarnail Singh Noorpur

Khalistan Commando Force/ Babbar Khalsa

On the land of Punjab, the birth of Shaheed Bhai Jarnail Singh took place in village Noorpur Jattan, District Kapurthala, from the blessed womb of Mata Gurdeep Kaur and in the house of Sardar Mahinder Singh. Bhai Sahib was about seven years old when his father passed away. Bhai Sahib had 3 brothers and two sisters. Among the brothers, he was in the second place. The family was large and the farming land they owned was small, so the household expenses were difficult to manage. At that time, the family was able to survive with the help of their maternal uncle. Bhai Jarnail Singh was a medium-sized, agile young man and as soon as he came to his senses, he started playing Kabaddi with the boys in their village. In the village Kabaddi tournament, Bhai Sahib was considered the best stopper in the 60 kg weight category. Bhai Sahib soon started working in Hamira Mill.

After the Indian government and communal Hindus started propaganda against the Sikhs who spoke for their and Punjab’s rights. Bhai Jarnail Singh, along with the activists of the All-India Sikh Students Federation started attending Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar to listen to speeches of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale and Bhai Amrik Singh. Soon Bhai Sahib was inspired by such Gursikhs and took Amrit from the Panj Pyare. When the Indian Army launched a fierce attack on Sri Darbar Sahib with tanks and cannons in June 1984, Bhai Jarnail Singh’s heart was torn apart. Like many youths of Punjab, he also gave up the love of his home and family to jump into the battlefield against the Indian government. His close associates were Shaheed Bhai Raghbir Singh Nimana, Shaheed Bhai Balwinder Singh Dhillon, Shaheed Bhai Jagjit Singh Gill (Ganganagar), Shaheed Bhai Balbir Singh Khassan and many other Jhujaru Singhs.

When (Shaheed) Bhai Balwinder Singh Dhillon and (Shaheed) Bhai Jagjit Singh Gill were arrested by the police and kept in Kapurthala Jail, Bhai Jarnail Singh and Bhai Raghbir Singh Nimana met them and a plan was made to help these Jhujaru Singhs escaped from jail. Bhai Sahib and Bhai Nimana successfully managed to help both the Jhujaru Singhs escape from the Kapurthala Jail by killing one policeman and injuring another. Bhai Sahib did many Jhujaru actions with the Singhs of Khalistan Commando Force. In November/December 1986, Bhai Jarnail Singh and Bhai Raghbir Singh Nimana joined Babbar Khalsa. From time to time, they continued to punish the enemies of the Sikh nation.

A police ASI started keeping an eye on the hideout of the Jhujaru Singhs in village Dakoha (Jalandhar). As soon as Bhai Jarnail Singh and his companions came to know about this, they killed him in Dakoha village and ran away with his 455-bore revolver. On the other hand, the police also started harassing and torturing Bhai Sahib’s family and relatives. On repeated complaints by the police informers of the village, the Dhilwan police set up a permanent police post in Bhai Sahib’s village.

In Babbar Khalsa, Bhai Sahib was doing Jhujaru actions with Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha Fattu Dhinga, Bhai Bahadur Singh, Master Balwinder Singh, Shaheed Bhai Baljit Singh Babbar, Shaheed Bhai Ajmer Singh, Shaheed Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar, Shaheed Bhai Hari Singh Raho, Shaheed Bhai Raminderjit Singh Tainee Babbar, Shaheed Bhai Manjit Singh Lalli, Bhai Satwinder Singh Mintu, Bhai Avtar Singh Mander, Bhai Manjit Singh, Bhai Deepa Singh, Bhai Makhan Singh Sandhu Chattha and many other Jhujaru Singhs.

One day, the Jhujaru Singhs planned to punish butcher SP Swaran Ghotna in May 1987. This is the same SP Ghotna, who made Bhai Manbir Singh Chaheru and Shaheed Bhai Amarjit Singh Shahzada martyrs. A remote-control bomb was fitted in a scooter and placed in front of the old court of Jalandhar on GT Road. All the Singhs started waiting for SP Ghotna. But due to technical reasons, the bomb material automatically fell out of the scooter. People gathered around the scooter. Seeing all this, all the fighters left the scene and the mission was aborted. Then the plan was prepared again. The second time, to punish Swaran Ghotna and his fellow policemen, it was planned to place bombs in a car and a scooter in front of Friend Cinema in Jalandhar on 1st June 1987, but unfortunately, due to some technical error, the bomb in the car exploded and Bhai Ajmer Singh Jamsher was martyred on the spot and Bhai Tirath Singh of Sandhu Chattha village was injured. Tirath Singh was admitted to Jalandhar Civil Hospital for treatment and then brought to village Helran.

On the informer’s information, the police surrounded Bhai Tirath Singh Sandhu Chattha in village Helran and arrested him. The police also found out about the remaining hideouts of the Singhs, after which Bhai Jarnail Singh was also arrested by the police. Both legs and arms of Bhai Sahib were broken by the police during brutal torture, then Bhai Sahib was taken to Chandigarh in an unconscious state by SP Swaran Ghotna, Thanedar Harjit Gabbar and ASI BK Sharma.

Later on in the day, a fierce encounter takes place between the Indian security forces and the Jhujaru Singhs in Chandigarh. In this encounter, Thanedar Harjit Gabbar is killed and ASI BK Sharma is seriously injured. From this encounter, the wrath of the police fell on Bhai Jarnail Singh who was then tortured and martyred on the night of 14th June 1987.
