Shaheed Bhai Jagtar Singh Babbi

Bhai Jagtar Singh Babbi was born in 1970, from the blessed womb of Mata Bir Kaur and in the house of Sardar Gurmukh Singh in Chatiwind Lehal village, off Mehta Road, district Amritsar. Bhai Babbi was the eldest of 5 siblings with another brother, and 3 sisters. Sardar Gurmukh Singh was a Majbi Sikh, and provided for his family by working as a laborer.

 

Bhai Babbi was very close to Bhai Davinder Singh Mukandpur, and when he went underground to join the Jhujaru Singhs fighting for Khalistan, Bhai Babbi continued his friendship by assisting Bhai Davinder Singh in small duties such as, providing food, shelter and delivering messages. Bhai Babbi was also very close to Bhai Seetal Singh Mattewal and also took on some responsibilities similar to what he did for Bhai Davinder Singh. Bhai Babbi continued to assist his Jhujaru brothers in secret without anyone knowing his true involvement.

 

On 21st February 1991, Bhai Babbi was travelling from Mukandpur to Chogwan Rupowali with Bhai Davinder Singh Mukandpur, both Singhs were armed. The Jhujaru Singhs were confronted by Punjab police jeeps near Maga Sarai village, near the local Gurdwara Sahib. There were 6/7 police jeeps, when the police saw Bhai Babbi and Bhai Davinder Singh, they opened fire, pushing the Jhujaru Singhs to also take positions and return fire. This fierce battle ensued for 2 hours, in which the 2 Jhujaru Singhs killed 8 police officer before attaining martyrdom themselves. The bodies of the Jhujaru Singhs were not given to the family and were quickly cremated by the police.
