Shaheed Bhai Inderjit Singh Rattangarh

Bhai Inderjit Singh was born on 15th September 1957, to the blessed womb of mother, Mata Angrej Kaur and father, Sardar Gurbaksh Singh in the village of Rattangarh, district Ropar. Bhai Inderjit Singh was one of seven children, with four brothers and two sisters; Bhai Jagir Singh, Bhai Jagjit Singh, Bhai Amarjit Singh, Bhai Inderjit Singh himself, Bhai Karamjit Singh, Bibi Dalbir Kaur and Bibi Jagjit Kaur. Bhai Inderjit Singh was well educated and had the opportunity to study up to graduate level. His father like most families in Punjab, earned their livelihood by working in the agriculture sector and farming their own land. Bhai Inderjit Singh was a devote Sikh and was blessed with Amrit from a very young age.

 

Whilst studying in college, he had joined the All-India Sikh Student Federation. He was very much part of the congregation and circle of the great Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale. In June 1984, the Indian Government attacked the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, Sri Harminder Sahib. This event had left Bhai Inderjit Singh completely distraught and his pang to avenge this set deep within him. Following this attack, Bhai Inderjit Singh decided to join the militia group Babbar Khalsa. He went onto orchestrate and participate in so many actions that it left the Delhi courthouse without a backbone. The Indian Government were hell bound to capture him.

 

It was under his command that other great Jhujaru Singhs served, such as Bhai Balwinder Singh Jattana, Bhai Charanjit Singh Channa, Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara etc. Bhai Inderjit Singh was also known as the first Jhujaru who rose and the first Shaheed of the Ropar region. His contribution to the Khalistan movement and the armed struggle is massive, it is beyond words and cannot be quantified. The entire movement was possible only because of Jhujaru Singhs who sacrificed their all.

 

One day, whilst Bhai Inderjit Singh was returning back from Takht Sri Damdama Sahib there was a sudden siege of police all around him. The police picked up Bhai Inderjit Singh and took him to the local village of Kala Sanghian in Kapurthala and executed him in a fake encounter. We are forever indebted to Bhai Inderjit Singh’s contributions. The Punjab police cremated Shaheed Bhai Inderjit Singh Rattangarh’s body in Kapurthala and had declared him an orphan.

Bhai Inderjit Singh of Rattangarh took his own life as the Punjab police attempted to arrest him. According to the Indian agencies, Bhai Inderjit Singh Rattangarh was wounded during a fierce battle with the police force of Thana Sadar, Kapurthala. When he realised that he has been surrounded by the police he swallowed cyanide and killed himself. Local police also informed us that on the night of 16th April, they had set up a checkpoint on the outskirts of village Kala Sanghian. The police were approached by a scooter without a numberplate at roughly 11pm. 2 people were on this scooter. When the police signalled them to stop, the 2 people on the scooter started firing at the police. In return fire from the police, the rider of the scooter was injured, meanwhile the second person managed to escape. As the police was transporting the wounded man to Kapurthala, he swallowed a cyanide capsule and died. The police found another cyanide capsule in his pocket along with a photo which had the following written on it, ‘Inderjit Singh s/o Sardar Gurbaksh Singh, village Rattangarh, district Ropar.’ Inderjit Singh was 30/32 years of age. It is worth mentioning that Inderjit Singh was made a Panthic Committee member just 2 days before his death.
