Bhai Harwant Singh alias Dr Jaswant Singh MBBS was born in 1965, from the blessed womb of Mata Gurmeet Singh and in the house of Captain Bakshish Singh in village Padiana, near Rayya. Bhai Sahib had an elder brother, Bhai Baljit Singh and a younger brother, Bhai Sukhwant Singh. Bhai Sahib was born in an army family, Captain Bakshish Singh had fought in war for the Indian army, from which he was rewarded many medals of bravery. Bhai Sahib studied upto 12th class at the schools of Baba Bakala and Dhilwan. After studying, Bhai Sahib started doing farming in his land.

 

During this time, Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale and Shiromani Akali Dal spearheaded the Dharam Yudh Morcha, which was to gain equal rights for the people of Punjab. Bhai Sahib attended many Dharam Yudh Morcha gatherings and listened to the sermons of Sant Ji. After the attack on Sri Harimandir Sahib in June 1984, Bhai Sahib was filled with rage against the Indian government. To hold the Indian government responsible for the killing of Sikhs and the destructions of Sikh Gurdwaras, Bhai Sahib started taking part in protests in his area. It was through these activities Bhai Sahib met Bhai Surjit Singh Painta and joined him in starting a life of Jhujaru Singh.

 

In 1986, Bhai Sahib was arrested for reasons there were unclear but was released a year later on bail. Bhai Sahib once again joined his Jhujaru brothers under the command of Bhai Surjit Singh Painta. Then in 1988, Bhai Sahib was arrested during the Black Thunder 2, when the Indian army stormed Sri Harimandir Sahib. Bhai Sahib was released again on bail in 1991. Upon being release, Bhai Sahib did not stay at home and instead joined Bhai Jagtar Singh Chananke and Bhai Joga Singh Khanpur.

 

At this point Bhai Sahib was at the age of 28 years. Mata Gurmeet Kaur tried to get her son to get married but everytime Bhai Sahib’s response would be the same, “Mother, I am fighting for our nation, and it is a path of martyrdom. Please don’t get me into an attachment of marriage.” Bhai Sahib remained in high spirits and loyal to the armed struggle under the command of Bhai Joga Singh Khanpur and Bhai Jagtar Singh Chananke. After going underground, Bhai Sahib’s family were extremely harassed by the Punjab police. Bhai Sahib’s brothers, and his retired army captain father, were arrested and blindly tortured. The locals had great amount of love and respect for Bhai Sahib.

 

On 8th February 1993, Bhai Sahib was staying in a house on the outskirts of Cheema Bath village. Bhai Sahib was alone but armed with weapons and ammunition. An informant had given this information to the local police station, soon after heavy number of Indian security personnel surrounded the village. Once Bhai Sahib realised that he had been surrounded, he started firing at the Indian soldiers that were trying to advance towards the house he was in. Fighting the Indian forces, Bhai Sahib tried to escape and had reached the village Wazir Bhullar, which was 2km from the starting point, but the Indian army had set up a checkpoint in this village in case Bhai Sahib tried to escape. Being surrounded from both sides, Bhai Sahib attained martyrdom fighting the Indian security forces. The body of Shaheed Bhai Harwant Singh alias Jaswant Singh MBBS was not given to the family, instead the police cremated the body in Amritsar as undeclared body.

Lieutenant General of Khalistan Armed Force Killed  

Today in the morning near Baba Bakala, Beas, in the village Cheema Bath, the Lieutenant General of Khalistan Armed Force, Dr Jaswant Singh MBBS was martyred in an encounter with the police.  SP Operation, H R Bugga told us that the local police station was informed about Jhujaru Singhs hiding out on the outskirts of the village. DSP of Baba Bakala, Balkar Singh and SHO Paramjit Singh along with CRPF and Indian commandos went to search the house of the newly elected Panchayat leader, Bibi Gurbachan Kaur when the Jhujaru Singh fired upon the police as he tried to escape. The police followed him and started firing back. The Jhujaru Singh took cover in farms, but the return fire from the police killed him. The Jhujaru Singh was identified as Bhai Harpreet Singh alias Harwant Singh alias Dr Jaswant Singh MBBS, son of Bakshish Singh Cheema Bath.

 

SP H R Bugga also informed us that Bhai Jaswant Singh had been arrested during Operation Black Thunder 2 in 1988, but had been released after. Then he was arrested again but once again was released on bail after which he joined the Jhujaru group again. The media was also informed that Bhai Jaswant Singh was wanted for 100 killings in Punjab.

 

Bhai Jaswant Singh had killed Santokh Singh, the Chananke village’s Cooperative Society’s secretary and also Harbhajan Singh along with his wife in Chananke village. At the sight of the encounter, the police recovered an AK47 assault rifle, 3 magazines, 1 HI36 grenade and large amount of ammunition from his body. Bhai Jaswant Singh was one of the most wanted Jhujaru Singhs. Some blank letter pads were also found on Bhai Jaswant Singh.
