Shaheed Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ghokha

Khalistan Liberation Force

Bhai Gurmukh Singh alias Ghokha from village Kalian Sakatran is one of the brave warriors of the Sikh struggle who gave his life tirelessly in the ongoing struggle for the achievement of Khalistan. Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ghokha was born in the house of Sardar Veer Singh, and from the blessed womb of Mata Harbans Kaur in the year 1959 in village Kalian Sakatran, near Patti, district Tarn Taran. Bhai Sahib’s elder brother was Bhai Kashmir Singh and the younger brothers were Bhai Virsa Singh, Bhai Jaswant Singh, Bhai Gurbaksh Singh.

After the attack on Sri Harimandir Sahib in June 1984 and then the November 1984 genocide of the Sikh community in Indian cities including Delhi, which was initiated by Rajiv Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi. None of the accused Hindu leaders were punished. Therefore, the Sikh youth, for the sake of restoration of Sikh pride, for the establishment of a national home of Sikhs and to take revenge from the oppressors, started on the path of freedom. Bhai Anar Singh Para, young Sikh boy from village Kalian Sakatran, who was 14 years old at that time, also walked on this path of freedom. Along with Bhai Anar Singh Para, other Sikh youth from the village also joined, including Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ghokha.

Bhai Gurmukh Singh secretly served in the Sikh struggle with the Jhujaru Singhs. Bhai Gurmukh Singh knew his was around the border and all the checkpoints, it was for this reason the Jhujaru Singhs would take him when crossing the border. The police were informed of Bhai Ghokha’s involvement and started arresting him every other day, fed up with the continuous harassment from the Punjab police, he left his home and joined his Jhujaru Singhs of Khalistan Liberation Force, under the command of Bhai Anar Singh Para. Bhai Ghokha took Amrit from the Panj Pyare and became attached to the path of Sikhi and sacrifice. Bhai Gurmukh Singh’s Jhujaru actions were sung by newspapers regularly.

Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ghokha, Bhai Mehal Singh Saido (near Harike Pattan) along with another companion were staying at Bhindi Aulakh village in near Ajnala, district Amritsar. The date was 28-29th Asu 1989. These days, farmer’s harvesting was going on and many farmers harvested with combines at night. It is common for farmers to visit the fields with tractor trolleys. A police informant informed the police that three Jhujaru Singh’s are staying at a house in Bhindi Aulakh. The police adopted a new policy to catch the Jhujaru Singhs. Instead of going in police vehicles, the police reached the house in Bhindi Aulakh, where the Jhujaru Singhs were staying. At night, Jhujaru Singhs heard tractors, but the family had assured them that it is only tractors working in the farms. As soon as the Jhujaru Singhs started sleeping, the civil clothed police pounced on them, tying their hands behind them with their turbans. After the arrest of Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ghokha (Kalian Sakatran), Bhai Mehal Singh Saido and another Jhujaru Singh from Aulakh Bhindi, the Punjab police brought them to Amritsar’s Mall Mandi interrogation centre and the Jhujaru Singhs were subjected to inhuman torture for three days. Then on the 1st of Katak 1989, all 3 Jhujaru Singhs were declared martyred in a false encounter.

The Sri Akhand Paath Sahib for the Shaheed Singhs was organized with the support of the community of the village and surrounding areas. Ragi group of Damdami Taksal performed Kirtan and praised the sacrifice of the Shaheed Singhs.
