Shaheed Bhai Gurmej Singh Geja

Khalistan Commando Force 

 

Area Commander of Khalistan Commando Force, Shaheed Bhai Gurmej Singh Geja was born in 1965 from the blessed womb of Mata Swaran Kaur and in the house of Sardar Gajjan Singh in village Talwandi Choudhrian, near Sultanpur Lodhi, district Kapurthala. Before 1947, his family lived in village Kana (nearby Shaher Kasha) of Lahore district and moved here from Pakistan during the partition of Punjab. Bhai Gurmej Singh has two younger brothers, Bhai Angrej Singh, Bhai Sawan Singh and three sisters, Bibi Gurcharan Kaur, Bibi Ninder Kaur and Bibi Kulwinder Kaur. Bhai Sahib’s entire family was religious and deeply attached to the Sikh faith. Bhai Sahib studied up to the 5th standard and then started working with his family. He was a very talented kabaddi player. 

 

In 1982, when the Dharam Yudh Morcha started, Sardar Gajjan Singh actively participated in this and was also gave his voluntary arrest along with other Sikhs from his village. Due to the attack on the Sri Darbar Sahib in June 1984, Bhai Sahib was deeply hurt. After this, when the armed struggle for the freedom of Khalistan started, in 1986-87, he also secretly joined the struggle and started helping the Jhujaru Singhs. The police came to know about Bhai Sahib’s activities and the police started harassing his family. One day, the police raided his house to catch him, but he was not found at home, but instead the police arrested his younger brother, Bhai Sawan Singh and tortured him at the police station. After this incident, Bhai Sahib permanently went underground and waged war on the anti-Sikh elements. Bhai Sahib was associated with warriors like Bhai Tarsem Singh Kohar, Baba Ranjit Singh Dyalgarh, Bhai Ajit Singh Qaddian, Bhai Kharak Singh Jhilli and Bhai Jasbir Singh Kala Ghosal of the Khalistan Commando Force. 

 

When Bhai Sahib was involved in the Khalistani struggle, the police brutally tortured his family members regularly. His house had been demolished and the police used it as a police post. The whole family became homeless. Brother, Bhai Sawan Singh was severely tortured in the CIA Staff of Kapurthala and then sent to jail after being charged with several false cases. In spite of all this, Bhai Sahib remained steadfast and determined to fight until the establishment of Khalistan. Bhai Gurmej Singh was very brave, courageous and a principled Jhujaru Singh. During the battles with Indian security forces, he was victorious killing many Indian soldiers. The police were using all methods to capture him but he was an expert in guerilla warfare. Bhai Sahib was mostly active in Gurdaspur, Dera Baba Nanak, Batala, Sri Hargobindpur and Pathankot area. Bhai Sahib was renowned for attacking many police stations and CRPF checkpoints. The name of Khalistan Commando Force used to resonate in newspapers.

 

Bhai Sahib attained martyrdom in November 1991, after making an important contribution to the Khalistan struggle. Information about how, when and where his martyrdom took place could not be obtained. After his martyrdom, his brother-in-law, Bhai Satnam Singh (village Sabra) was arrested from his house by the police and killed and his sister, Bibi Charan Kaur and Bibi Kulwinder Kaur were also kept in the police station and subjected to immense torture. The butcher police officers made each and every member of Bhai Sahib’s family a victim of their oppression and the family continued to spend their days living in the vicinity of government terrorism.
