Shaheed Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta

Sikh Student Federation 

 

Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta was born in 26th May 1965, in the house of Sardar Jamsher Singh Zaildar and from the blessed womb of Mata Mukhtiar Kaur in village Poohli of Bathinda district. Sardar Jamsher Singh and Mata Mukhtiar Kaur were blessed with two sons and a daughter, which included Shaheed Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta, Bhai Jagsher Singh and Bibi Mandeep Kaur. The family was engaged in farming as an occupation and had a large-scale farming business. Bhai Gurmeet Singh’s family had the nicknamed him Meeta. Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta passed his 10th grade from Government Higher Secondary School in village Nathana and then got admission in Guru Nanak Engineering College of Ludhiana. Bhai Gurmeet Singh was a very good hockey player.

 

Bhai Gurmeet Singh was doing his Diploma in Civil Engineering, at that time the Dharam Yudh Morcha was in full swing and branches of the Sikh Students Federation were being established in various colleges. When a branch of Federation was established in Guru Nanak Engineering, Bhai Gurmeet Singh took membership and started participating in the activities of the Sikh Students Federation. Bhai Gurmeet Singh’s heart was very sad when the Indian army attacked Sri Harimandir Sahib in June 1984. When Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, that same evening Bhai Gurmeet Singh along with his friends distributed Laddu in front of the college. Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta provided all kinds of support to the chief of Khalistan Liberation Force, Bhai Gurjant Singh Budhsinghwala and his colleagues. Bhai Gurmeet Singh was very fond of Bhai Gurjit Singh Harihar Jhok, the President of Sikh Students Federation.

 

When the police found out about Bhai Gurmeet Singh’s involvement within the Khalistan movement early 1987, his underground life as a Jhujaru Singh began. The next year 1988, the Sarbat Khalsa 1986 chosen Jathedar of Sri Akaal Takht Sahib, Bhai Jasvir Singh Rode was released from Tihar Jail. With the directions of Sri Akaal Takht Sahib, both groups of the Sikh Students Federation were dissolved and a five-member ad hoc committee was formed under the leadership of Bhai Gurjit Singh Harihar Jhok. Bhai Gurjit Singh Kaka, member of this ad hoc committee was arrested by civil clothed policemen on 13th May 1988, while drinking tea from a Dhaba in front of Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana, he was later martyred by CIA staff in Patiala after severe torture. Both the legs of Bhai Gurjit Singh Kaka were wrapped in cloth and set on fire by the police. After the martyrdom of Bhai Gurjit Singh Kaka, Sikh Students Federation convener, Bhai Gurjit Singh Harihar Jhok was arrested from Jangpur village of Ludhiana district.

 

After some time, Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu became the convener of the Sikh Student Federation and Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta became a member of the ad hoc committee. Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta played a constructive role in organizing the Sikh Students Federation members and branches at various places. Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta participated in Jhujaru actions and punished the hypocrites of the Sikh nation and the cruel policemen that were killing innocent Sikhs. Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta was traveling in a bus on 2nd August 1988, when the police surrounded him near village Barhar. Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta gave his martyrdom by swallowing a cyanide capsule instead of coming into the hands of the police alive. Bhai Gurmeet Singh’s family suffered a lot during his Jhujaru life. The Sikh nation salutes the martyrdom of Shaheed Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta for his contribution in the freedom struggle of Khalistan.

Meeta Takes His Own Life

Chandigarh, 2 August (Agency PTB) – Today in Punjab, Bhai Gurmeet Singh alias Meeta took his own life. One of the 5 members of Sikh Student Federation’s Ad Hoc Committee, Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta committed suicide by consuming a cyanide capsule. Punjab police DG KPS Gill said that when Meeta got off the bus near Barhar village on the Sangrur-Barnala Road, the police asked him to stop, but he ran and the police chased him. But during this time, he committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule.

It was suspected that Bhai Gurmeet Singh Meeta was involved in the murders of Sri Darbar Sahib Head Granthi, Giani Sohan Singh and Shromani Committee Secretary, Bhan Singh. Similarly, he was wanted for the murder of former Congress Minister, Tarlochan Singh.
