Bhai Gurjinder Singh Rana was born in the year 1975 to the blessed womb of mother, Mata Amarjit Kaur and father, Sardar Amrik Singh, in the village of Dadyal, near Mehalpur, district Hoshiarpur. He was one of three children, with a younger brother Bhai Rashpal Singh and a younger sister, Bibi Neelam Kaur. Bhai Gurjinder Singh hailed from a normal village family, who earned their livelihood by working in agriculture and farming their family-owned land. He studied up to tenth grade at a school in the neighbouring village of Pakhowal. He then went on to enrol in a two-year ITI Mechanical Course.

 

In the year 1990, the armed struggle and fight for Khalistan was very active in his locality. From a young age Bhai Gurjinder Singh was fond of and a close friend of Bhai Gurlaat Singh who lived in a nearby village of Sursingh. As soon as Bhai Gurlaat Singh reached a suitable young adult age, he indefinitely left his family and went onto join the movement to fight for the freedom of Khalistan, by joining Jhujaru Singhs. Bhai Gurjinder Singh was also keen to join his friend. However, his family pressured him not to do such a thing. It came to a point where Bhai Gurjinder Singh was so determined to also fight for the cause that he went against his family and secretly began to serve with the Jhujaru Singhs.

 

On 16th September 1991, Bhai Gurlaat Singh attained Shaheedi (martyrdom). This did not deter Bhai Gurjinder Singh, he continued to serve with the Jhujaru Singhs. Bhai Gurjinder Singh also served alongside two other well-known militia groups, the Khalistan Commando Force under the command of Bhai Paramjit Singh Panjwar and Babbar Khalsa under the of Bhai Dharam Singh Kashtiwal.

 

In 1992, an action was planned to eliminate five Narakhdhari individuals (anti-Sikh elements). The plan was executed and all five were eliminated. The police carried out their investigation and without hesitation they planted the allegation on Bhai Gurjinder Singh. He decided to go on the run to escape the wrath of the police and went completely underground. He needed to remain active in the movement and did not want to get found. His family pressured him to stay out of the area and sent him to Sri Anandpur Sahib. Even here he continued to remain active and participated in Jhujaru missions where possible. It was in during November-December of 1995, Bhai Gurjinder Singh’s family got the news of his martyrdom.
