Shaheed Bhai Gurdeep Singh Gopi

Bhai Gurdeep Singh Gopi was born in 1965, in the house of Sardar Jagir Singh and from the blessed womb of Mata Makit Kaur, in the village of Bhauwal, district Ropar. Bhai Gurdeep Singh was the eldest brother to his siblings, Shaheed Bhai Nirvair Singh Nandu and youngest sister, Bibi Satwinder Kaur. Bhai Gurdeep Singh continued to study for his BA at a college in Ropar.

 

Bhai Gurdeep Singh also attended Sri Manji Sahib within the Sri Harimandir Sahib complex to listen to the speeches of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale. Bhai Amrik Singh Khalsa, the president of All India Sikh Student Federation had made Bhai Gurdeep Singh Gopi the President of the Ropar college branch of AISSF.

 

After the attack of Sri Darbar Sahib in June 1984, Bhai Gurdeep Singh joined the local Jhujaru Singhs on the battlefield against the Indian security forces to fight for the Sikh homeland. Bhai Gurdeep Singh completed many Jhujaru actions and killed many anti-Sikh elements. Bhai Gurdeep Singh was known by all in his area, for his fair and courageous actions. Both, Bhai Gurdeep Singh and his younger brother, Bhai Nirvair Singh Nanda had done many actions under the command of Bhai Charanjit Singh Channa, Bhai Balwinder Singh Jattana, Bhai Aagi Singh Kamalpura and Bhai Harmeet Singh Bhauwal.

 

Bhai Gurdeep Singh was arrested from house where he had been resting, from here he was imprisoned at Ambala jail, in the Haryana state. Then on 8th September 1992, Punjab police took Bhai Gurdeep Singh Gopi from Ambala jail and made him a martyr in a staged encounter.

 

Shaheed Bhai Gurdeep Singh Gopi’s family home remained a police base for some time after his martyrdom. The family had been displaced, the cattle had been open and let loose, all the furniture and belongings had been looted by the police.
