Shaheed Bhai Didar Singh Bhakna

Bhai Didar Singh Darri was born in village Bhakna, district Amritsar, in the house of Sardar Randhir Singh and from the blessed womb of Mata Swaran Kaur on 6th December 1969. Bhai Sahib had 2 brother and 3 sisters, eldest being Bhai Gulzar Singh, Bhai Didar Singh Darri (Shaheed), Bibi Kuldeep Kaur, Bibi Gurjit Kaur, Bhai Jatinder Singh and the youngest, Bibi Gurmeet Kaur. Bhai Sahib got his primary education from the school in village Bhakna and he passed his tenth class in Baba Sohan Singh School also in Bhakna. After studies, Bhai Sahib started working as a photographer, and opened a photography shop in Bhakna. Later many Jhujaru Singhs also came to Bhai Sahib’s studio to take photos. Bhai Sahib was a very kind hearted person and stayed in high spirits all the time. He was very popular and had gained respect from everyone. 

 

Due to his regular contact with the Jhujaru Singhs, Bhai Sahib was also inspired to fight against injustice. Bhai Sahib became close of Jhujaru, Bhai Gurpal Singh Para and started taking part in Jhujaru actions in secret. One day, during the ongoing Sikh struggle for freedom, Bhai Sahib and his Jhujaru companion, Bhai Sawinder Singh Sohal of Khalistan Commando Force were travelling when all of a sudden, they were surrounded near village Singhpur and the police took them into their custody. 

 

The police tortured Bhai Sahib a lot, his body was beaten and his bones were broken. But Bhai Sahib kept reciting the name of God and nothing else came out of his mouth. Then on 15th November 1990, Bhai Didar Singh Darri was taken to a location and made a martyr by being killing him a staged police encounter. The body of Bhai Sahib was given to the family who cremated him in Bhakna village.
