Shaheed Bhai Darshan Singh Sanghna

 

Bhai Darshan Singh was born to the blessed womb of mother, Mata Bhagwan Kaur and father, Sardar Najar Singh, in the village of Sanghna, district Amritsar. Bhai Darshan Singh was a devote Sikh and lived a religious life style from a young age. He went onto serve at a religious institution at Gurdwara Smadh Shaheed Baba Nodh Singh Ji. Bhai Darshan Singh became a Nihang Singh (martial factor of the Sikh nation). He lived at this religious institution and then eventually got married to Bibi Surjit Kaur. They were blessed with one child.

 

In 1982, Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale led the Dharam Yudh Morcha actively protesting and educating the masses on the oppression inflicted on the Sikh Nation by the Indian Government. The Dharam Yudh Morcha met with such momentum that the only way the Indian Government thought they could control the uprise was to squash the Sikh People. So in June 1984, the Indian Government planned an attack on the holiest Sikh shrine Sri Harmandir Sahib, where a battle then ensued with the Sikh warriors who fought back.

 

As part of this pre-planned attack, the Indian Government had listed a number of other Gurdwaras which were attacked the same day as the attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib. One of the targeted Gurdwaras was Gurdwara Smadh Shaheed Baba Nodh Singh Ji, where Bhai Darshan Singh served.

 

Bhai Darshan Singh had completed his duties and was making his way from his home across the site towards the Gurdwara building when a bunch of Indian army soldiers shot him dead as he was walking across. Til this day his picture is displayed in the Shaheed gallery at Sri Darbar Sahib as one of the Shaheeds of June 1984.
