Bhai Bohar Singh was born in the year 1969 to the blessed womb of mother, Mata Gian Kaur and father, Jathedar Sardar Bahal Singh in the village of Valtoha, Patti, district Tarn Taran. Bhai Bohar Singh was the eldest of six children. He had two younger brothers, Bhai Paramjit Singh, Bhai Kuldip Singh and three younger sisters, Bibi Amrik Kaur, Bibi Gurmeet Kaur and Bibi Ranjit Kaur. Bhai Bohar Singh’s father worked as a Granthi Singh to earn a living for his family. Bhai Bohar Singh helped his father and did not attend school nor gain an education, such were their circumstances.

 

During the years of 1987-1988, Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale’s father; Jathedar Joginder Singh Rode attended a religious program at the village of Valtoha and shared sermons on the Khalistan movement and right to self-determination. Bhai Bohar Singh was moved by these speeches and he knew then he too had to fight for the Guru-Panth and fight for freedom. The reality of being enslaved in this so-called democratic country India was now all too real. Sikhs were being treated like third class citizens. Bhai Bohar Singh very soon was introduced to the Jhujaru Singhs from Khalistan Liberation Force and as per his wishes he left his family and home to join them.

 

Bhai Bohar Singh served alongside Bhai Surjit Singh Seetal Jhakkar and participated in many successful Jhujaru actions eliminating the perpetrators and anti-Sikh elements. The areas that he covered were Gagubua, Bhikhiwind and Sursingh localities and served equally for all Jhujaru groups in the area; Khalistan Liberation Force, Khalistan Commando Force and Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan. As Bhai Bohar Singh was serving the movement, the heinous police were vicious and cared not for humanity. They harassed his family and mercilessly tortured his family members. They beat Bhai Bohar Singh’s father so bad that they broke every bone in his hands and the fingers became bent and disabled. His father’s ear drums were also damaged. The police did not spare Bhai Bohar Singh’s brother nor sisters, who were all tortured.

 

On 23rd September 1990, at approximately 6 o’clock in the morning, Bhai Bohar Singh and five other Jhujaru Singhs were at a rest location in the village of Massa Singh Bhaini. The Jhujaru Singhs were touted out by an informant, then all of a sudden, they were surrounded by huge forces of the Punjab police and CRPF. The battle continued until 8 o’clock in the evening that same day, a total of 14 hours. The Jhujaru warriors fought like lions against the forces of Hindustan. Let this be clear, this guerilla warfare was no walk in the park. These Jhujaru Singhs were not fighting small amateur groups, this was the CRPF of India which they were fighting against. The Jhujaru Singhs had Guru-Panth on their side and fought ferociously killing hundreds at any one time. The police failed to reach the six Jhujaru warriors, so they then resorted to throwing bombs at the Jhujaru Singhs.

 

Only two Jhujaru Singhs managed to escape the grip of thousands of surrounding CRPF police. Bhai Bohar Singh, Bhai Anoop Singh Fauji (village Sursingh), Bhai Lakhwinder Singh alias Garja Singh (village Sursingh) and Bhai Rajwinder Singh alias Bota Singh (village Manan) all attained Shaheedi (martyrdom). Another local Jhujaru militia group from Ghuk Maneh Maliyan came to the area in a bid to support the Jhujaru Singhs to escape. But the CRPF were in their thousands and were unable to break the surrounding cordon. In that time, Bhai Bohar Singh and his fellow Jhujaru Singhs had already attained Shaheedi. Bhai Bohar Singh’s body had been burnt by the bomb strikes. The police took all six bodies to the hospital in Bhikhiwind and following a post mortem all were cremated without informing their families.

 

On 2nd October 1990, a Sri Akhand Paath Sahib was held with final prayers for all who attained Shaheedi. Thousands attended to pay their respects to these sons of Dhan Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. These great souls were also remembered by various leaders of the movement – Bhai Gurjant Singh Budhsinghwala, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Babbar, Bhai Wadhawa Singh Babbar, Bhai Harbhajan Singh Mand, Bhai Anar Singh Para, Bhai Pippal Singh Dalewal, Bhai Kinderbir Singh Gill, Bhai Resham Singh Thande, Bhai Balwant Singh BA, Bhai Nishan Singh Makhu.
