Bhai Balwinder Singh Bharpur was born in the year 1964, to the blessed womb of mother Mata Balvir Kaur and father Sardar Balkar Singh, in the village of Aahlan, Makhu, Ferozepur. He was one of four children, being the third eldest, with two brothers and a sister. Bibi Paramjeet Kaur, Bhai Shamsher Singh, Bhai Balwinder Singh and Lakhwinder Singh. The family lived a traditional village life and earned their livelihood by farming their family-owned land.

 

In his young years, Bhai Balwinder Singh’s father was charged and imprisoned for a murder case. For this reason, Bhai Balwinder Singh never went to school nor got the opportunity to study. There was no bread winner of the family and times were hard for them. Bhai Balwinder Singh took on the responsibility to farm their land. In 1986, his marriage was arranged and had his Anand Karaj with Bibi Gurwinder Kaur (Village Buh, Harike). They were blessed with two sons, Bhai Gurpreet Singh and Bhai Gurjant Singh.

It was the late 1980s and the armed struggle for a free Khalistan was in full fledge. Bhai Balwinder Singh was in full support of the movement. He often saw Jhujaru Singhs passing through his village. One day he made contact with them and pledged his support. From this day onwards, whenever they came through the village Bhai Balwinder Singh and his family would serve them meals and provide a place of rest. He built a good relationship with the Jhujaru Singhs and became close to them all. He also came into contact with Bhai Nishan Singh Makhu leader of the Khalistan Liberation Force. Bhai Balwinder Singh wanted to do more, serve alongside his Jhujaru brothers in actions and be a part of the armed movement. So, in 1988 he joined them and contributed greatly, fulfilling many actions successfully.

On 21st October 1989, Bhai Balwinder Singh Bharpur, Bhai Nishan Singh Makhu and one other Jhujaru Singh were sat on top of a farm house in the village of Nareh Malhi. They were all armed and were staying here as a temporary hide out. Unfortunately, an informant got to know of this and tipped off the police. Very soon after, the entire location was surrounded by hundreds of police and CRPF forces. A firing battle instantly began. The Jhujaru Singhs remained steadfast in their fight. Bhai Nishan Singh Makhu was able to escape. However, both Bhai Balwinder Singh and his fellow Jhujaru Singh stayed fighting until their last bullet. On their last bullet, both Jhujaru Singhs shot themselves because they knew if they had not done this, the chances of the police capturing them alive was high. This would result in torture and intense interrogation. Both Bhai Balwinder Singh and his Jhujaru Singh breathed their last on the battle field. Hundreds of police and CRPF personnel were injured, and DSP Ghuman had been gunned down by these two brave lions. In memory of these great Jhujaru Singhs, the people of the village hoisted a flag in their honour.
