Shaheed Bhai Arjan Singh Sensra

Bhai Arjan Singh was born in the year 1973 to the blessed womb of mother, Mata Harnam Kaur and father, Sardar Buta Singh in the village of Sensra, near Ajnala. Bhai Sahib was the youngest of five sons. Bhai Arjan Singh was born into a normal, simple village family who earned their livelihood by farming their family-owned land. Bhai Arjan Singh studied up to ninth grade at his local village. During tenth grade, was when he decided to go underground and serve with the militia groups, dedicating his life to the Khalistan movement. This was the year 1990 and he went to join the militia group of Bhai Tasbeer Singh Jhander of Khalistan Liberation Force. Alongside serving the armed struggle, his religious roots were deep and he was a very devote Gursikh from a very young age. This path was a martial and spiritual alike. He fought for his Guru and Guru-Panth.

 

Bhai Arjan Singh participated in many Jhujaru actions and did so with great bravery at his very young age. He was very intelligent in orchestrating actions and would be regularly take on senior responsibilities. So much so, that the police got to know of him and were hell bound in trying to track him down. The police had put a bounty on his head for 1 Lakh Rupees. His family was mercilessly harassed and tortured. Very often, the police would pick up brothers, sister in-laws and parents and take them to the local police station for interrogation. They would be unfairly tortured and interrogated then released when no information was disclosed. The police even destroyed their family home and treated it like a pit stop to come and cause havoc. There was another Jhujaru Singh known by the name of Bhai Dilawar Sharma from village Sultanwind, who Bhai Sahib was extremely close with. They participated in many Jhujaru actions and missions together successfully escaping the police every time.

 

In the year 1992, there was a day when Bhai Arjan Singh went to secretly meet his family. Unfortunately, an informant was in the know of this and immediately informed the police. The police arrived and Bhai Arjan Singh made a dash to escape from the house. As he was running out, he bumped into the Sub-Inspector (Thanedar). With a quick reflex, Bhai Arjan Singh swung his palm and slapped the Sub-inspector in the face. This disorientated the sub-inspector who tumbled to the floor, giving Bhai Arjan Singh an opportunity to run away. In turn the police, took Bhai Sahib’s father and brother into custody. It is said the police mercilessly killed his father, Sardar Buta Singh at an unknown location and returned his brother, dropped him outside the family home in a half-dead state. He had been brutally tortured.

 

The police were already on a major hunt for Bhai Arjan Singh. It had come to a point where all the Jhujaru Singhs from his Jhujaru group had attained martyrdom and Bhai Arjan Singh was the last one standing. It was nearing the mid 90’s and calls were being made by the state and central authorities to drop arms and end the armed struggle. Many had begun to do so. There were also many infiltrated touts and Black Cats let loose to find the last remaining Jhujaru Singhs. But Bhai Arjan Singh was not ready to lay down his arms and was not going down defeated. He continued to manoeuvre around Punjab by changing disguise.

 

Eventually a tout caught him in his line of sight. On 7th March 1993, Bhai Arjan Singh was disguised and had joined the parade of congregation which was making its way to Sri Anandpur Sahib for the Holla Mahalla festival. However, the tout recognised him and Bhai Arjan Singh realised this. Although he had a pistol on him, he knew he was in a crowded area with innocent people and so decided to take a cyanide capsule. He attained Shaheedi (martyrdom), dedicated to the cause until his final breath.

 

The arrogant, egoistic police needed to appear undefeated and so took Bhai Arjan Singh’s body, took it to his home village, Sensra and displayed a fake encounter claiming his death was the result of an altercation between the two. His body was then cremated without the permissions of his family, at the crematorium in Seetla Mandir, Amritsar.
