Shaheed Bhai Angrej Singh Gora

Amar Shaheed Bhai Angrej Singh Gora of Babbar Khalsa was born in 1972 in the house of his father, Sardar Bakshish Singh and mother, Mata Mahinder Kaur in the village of Mari Kambo Ki, Tehsil Patti, present-day district Tarn Taran. He studied up to tenth grade. His father used to do farming. Bhai Gora had four brothers Bhai Janga Singh, Bhai Puran Singh, Bhai Mureed Singh, Bhai Harpal Singh and two sisters, Bibi Ninder Kaur and Bibi Veer Kaur.

 

Involvement in the Khalistan Movement

Bhai Gora had a great desire to join the army. But it was destined for him not to get a job in the Indian army for money but to instead join the Khalsa army to fight for the freedom of the Sikh nation and to be martyred. He had just stepped on the threshold of youth when he had the good fortune to associate with Babbar Khalsa’s Lieutenant General, (Shaheed) Bhai Hardev Singh Babbar (Village Jorh Singh Wala). Bhai Gora was so impressed by dedication and bravery of the Jhujaru Singhs of this group that Bhai Gora immediately took Amrit from the Panj Pyare. Bhai Gora started doing Jhujaru actions in secret with the Jhujaru Singhs and then after some time he left the love of his family and jumped openly into the armed struggle of Khalistan’s war of independence.

 

Along with the Jhujaru Singhs, Bhai Gora took the Khalistan movement to heights. This group of Jhujaru Singhs restored the respect of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, kept the government on their feet by doing big and small militant actions. Bhai Gora and his group also ran a movement of social reform, completely stopped all kinds of drugs from being sold, black cats and touts were suppressed. The nation’s traitors and enemies were challenged and punished, and several attacks were made on police stations and CRPF cantonments.

 

Martyrdom

According to information received from the family, one day under the leadership of Bhai Hardev Singh Babbar, 8 to 10 Jhujaru Singhs including Bhai Angrej Singh Gora were staying at a house in village Lalu Ghuman near Jhabbal. On being informed, under the command of the butcher DGP of Punjab KPS Gill, police forces, CRPF and National Security Guard personnel surrounded the villages of Lalu Ghumman and surrounding areas. According to the locals, the number of Indian forces was around three thousand and all the soldiers were equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and they had bulletproof vehicles and tractors.

 

There was a fierce battle between the Indian forces and the Jhujaru Singhs for about 50 hours day and night, in which the sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj showed such amazing bravery that the Sikh nation will be proud of it for centuries. The Indian forces were scattered from Lalu Ghumman village to Mannan, continuously raining bullets. It is not easy or common to describe the scene of this encounter in words. Butcher KPS Gill had put all his strength into this battle, but still, he could not control the bravery, determination and marksmanship of the Jhujaru Singhs. Bhai Hardev Singh Babbar and others managed to escape from this encounter by breaking the siege. In this encounter, Bhai Angrej Singh Gora along with few of his Jhujaru brothers kept fighting to allow others to escape, they killed many soldiers of the Indian forces.

 

After fighting continuously for 50 hours, day and night and after running out of bullets, on 2nd August 1990, Bhai Angrej Singh Gora and Bhai Malagar Singh (Village Mehmoodpura), Bhai Harjit Singh Toti (Village Lalu Ghumman), Bhai Kashmir Singh (Village Lalu Ghumman), Bhai Joginder Singh (Village Bathal), Bhai Lakhwinder Singh Thatha, Bhai Sukhdev Singh (Village Thattha) and Bhai Nachhattar Singh Bhola (Village Ratta Gudda) attained martyrdom. Then the bodies of the martyred Singhs were taken to Jhabbal police station and there, countless congregations gathered to have the last darshan of the martyrs. The mother of Shaheed Bhai Angrej Singh Gora also reached there and lovingly caressed the body of her son. After this, the police did not hand over the bodies of the martyred Singhs to the family and they cremated the martyrs and handed over the ashes to the family. 

 

When giving information, Mata Mahinder Kaur told us that she did not cry at all that day. A bullet had hit her son’s ear and his ear was torn off and his whole body was covered in blood. All the people standing around were singing praises of my son’s bravery, which made me feel very proud and I remembered the four Sahibzade of Kalgidhar Patshah. My son also became immortal forever by writing his name in the line of martyrs.

 

In memory of the Shaheed Singhs, Sri Akhand Paath Sahib was held in their villages on 11th August 1990. The advertisements for the martyrdom ceremony were issued by Jathedar Bhai Sukhdev Singh Dasuwal Babbar, Bhai Mehal Singh Babbar, Bhai Dharam Singh Kashtiwal Babbar, Bhai Mahinder Singh Piond Babbar, Bhai Madha Singh Babbar, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Chacha Chabba Babbar, Jathedar Bhai Gurjant Singh Budhsinghwala, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha, Bhai Paramjit Singh Pamma Panjwar and Bhai Hardev Singh Babbar Jorh Singh Wala. In the prayer meetings, countless congregations paid homage to these Khalistani fighters and saluted their martyrdom. The martyrdom of these Singhs will not go in vain.
