Shaheed Bhai Amritpal Singh Dalera alias Nandpuri

Bhai Amritpal Singh was born in October 1965, to the blessed womb of mother Mata Niranjan Kaur and in the house of father Sardar Piara Singh at their village of Daburji, Tarn Taran. Although, born in Daburji, the family lived in Sarhali Kalan. He was one of five children, with three sisters and one brother – Bibi Narinder Kaur, Bibi Rajwinder Kaur, Bhai Amritpal Singh (Shaheed), Bibi Sarabjit Kaur and Bhai Gurbhej Singh. Punjab was a land of agriculture and was the backbone of village life and family income. Like most Punjabi families in the village, Bhai Amritpal Singh’s family also worked in agriculture to earn a humble living. At a young age of only twelve years old, their father passed away. Being the eldest of the sons, Bhai Amritpal Singh had to take on the family responsibilities on his young shoulders. This meant managing the farming and earnings. Bhai Amritpal Singh still managed to continue his schooling and studied up to tenth grade at his local village school in Sarhali Kalan. After finishing schooling, he successfully got a job working at the Punjab Electricity Board and worked here for many years. With the events of June 1984 and the established fight for a free homeland Khalistan, Bhai Amritpal Singh was brought closer to his faith and understanding the current politics of the Sikh nation. He was blessed and baptised with Amrit. On 27th November 1986, Bhai Amritpal Singh’s Anand Karaj (marriage) was arranged with Bibi Rajwant Kaur. They were blessed with three children – Harpal Singh, Sandeep Kaur and Nirmaljit Kaur.

 

In 1988, Bhai Amritpal Singh came into contact with Jhujaru Singhs in his area and began serving alongside them. For quite some time, he was able to carry out actions and activities without getting known, even staying nights away days at a time. It took a couple of years before the police then caught wind of his name involved in activities. They began to carry out raids on his family home in an attempt to fish him out. Bhai Amritpal Singh decided it was time for him to go fully underground. So, he went on to join Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji Manochahal (BTKF – Bhindranwala Tigers Force of Khalistan) and served under his command. Bhai Amritpal Singh not only served the armed struggle, but he also believed in Sewa and giving back to society. He made it his charitable work to arrange marriages of daughters from less fortunate families.

 

On one occasion, Bhai Sahib and fellow Jhujaru Singhs attended one of the weddings he had arranged on the request of the bride’s family. Somehow, the police came to know of this and sent forces to surround the village. Amazingly, the Jhujaru Singhs were so tactful that they managed to escape without being caught and the police were left scratching their heads. Bhai Amritpal Singh participated in many Jhujaru actions successfully eliminating anti-Sikh elements and perpetrators. He also instigated other plans and delegated duties. He had completely surrendered himself for the cause and knew the only end would be attaining Shaheedi (martyrdom).

 

On 5th September 1993, it was late evening and Bhai Amritpal Singh and about six other Jhujaru Singhs were resting at an undisclosed rest house in the village of Korhe Wadhan, near Chohla Sahib. All Jhujaru Singhs were fully armed. An informant touted them out to the police and within a very short time, mass forces surrounded the unknown rest house. A fierce shoot out ensued with heavy bullet fire. Two to three police officers were shot dead with many more wounded. Bhai Amritpal Singh along with three others were shot down and attained Shaheedi (martyrdom). The rest of the Jhujaru Singhs managed to escape. They sacrificed their life for the fight for Khalistan and gave their head to the Guru and Khalsa Panth. They will never be forgotten.
