Shaheed Bhai Amarjit Singh Jeeta

Bhai Jeeta was born from the blessed womb of Mata Parkash Kaur and in the house of Sardar Chanan Singh in village Bir Pind, district Nakodar. Bhai Jeeta was the youngest of 4 brothers. Sardar Chanan Singh took good care of his family and provided for them through farming his lands. Bhai Jeeta studied upto 8th class at a school in a nearby village of Sidhwan. Bhai Jeeta’s whole family were deeply connect to Sikh faith. His grandfather, Sardar Bhola Singh was linked to Damdami Taksal and the Akalis during the Jaito Morcha. The British had arrested Sardar Bhola Singh and demanded an apology letter, after which he would be released, but Sardar Bhola Singh along with many others refused to apologise and gave their martyrdom behind the bars of the jail. This is the brave history of Bhai Jeeta’s family, and he was shy to walk on the same path of sacrifice.

 

Bhai Jeeta had a very calm personality and also did what he thought was right. As well as studying, Bhai Jeeta was also a good Kabaddi player, alongside another Singh from his village, Bhai Paramjit Singh Pamma, both played Kabaddi together. Both, Bhai Jeeta and Bhai Pamma were good friends long before the Sikh struggle for Khalistan started and even after, during the Sikh struggle both Singhs stayed together till their last breath. After completing his studies, Bhai Jeeta started working at a manufacturing factory in Kapurthala. Bhai Jeeta worked here for while than found work at a cotton factory in Nakodar. It was during this period, the Indian army attacked Sri Darbar Sahib in June 1984.

 

The attack on Sri Harimandir Sahib had a deep impact on Sikhs worldwide, especially the young generation who could not sleep in peace. Bhai Jeeta was amongst the young Sikh generation of Punjab. It was in 1984, while working in Nakodar, Bhai Jeeta and Bhai Paramjit Singh Pamma met Bhai Satpal Singh Pala of All India Sikh Student Federation. The sister of Bhai Pala was married in Bhai Jeeta’s village and for the reason Bhai Pala use to visit the village regular. Having great love for Sikhi, Bhai Jeeta felt more attached to the Sikh struggle and joined Bhai Pala in the fight against oppression. Bhai Jeeta now started doing Jhujaru actions under the command of Bhai Pala. In 1985, the Punjab police had declared Bhai Jeeta as a fugitive and for this reason he went underground to avoid being captured. Bhai Jeeta punished many anti-Sikh elements under the command of Bhai Pala and Bhai Gurdeep Singh Deepa Heranwala of Khalistan Commando Force. There were times where Bhai Jeeta attacked police checkpoints also, the Indian security forces in the Doaba area feared Bhai Jeeta. Bhai Jeeta was loved by all Jhujaru Singhs, some Jhujaru Singh who were in his group were Bhai Paramjit Singh Pamma (village Bir Pind), Bhai Avtar Singh Tara (village Bir Pind), Bhai Naresh Kumar Kanda (village Gahir, Nakodar), Bhai Kulvir Singh Barapind and Bhai Satpal Singh Pala.

 

In October 1989, Punjab police were trying their best to capture Bhai Jeeta and his Jhujaru group. A police informant had Bhai Naresh Kumar Kanda arrested, after which he was blindly tortured for information on fellow Jhujaru Singhs. The police had put hot rods through Bhai Kanda’s thighs, it was during the same time Bhai Jeeta was also arrested from Nakodar. The police were unable to attain any information from the 2 Jhujarus, the police decided to get the rewards and killed them in a staged encounter. On 10th October 1989, Bhai Amarjit Singh Jeeta and Bhai Naresh Kumar Kanda were made martyrs in an encounter on the bridge of Jagpalpur and Ranipur. The body of Bhai Kanda was given to his family, meanwhile the police cremated Bhai Jeeta themselves away from any family members.
