Shaheed Bhai Amarjit Singh Amba

Bhai Amarjit Singh Amba was born on 21st Harr 1956, from the blessed womb of Mata Balvir Kaur and in the house of Sardar Kashmir Singh in village Ram Singh Wala, district Mand. Bhai Sahib had 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Sardar Kashmir Singh was a farmer. The village of Ram Singh Wala is situated on the edge of Satluj River. The Pakistan border is also very close to Bhai Sahib’s village. Due to not having much land, Bhai Sahib’s family also worked as labourers. Bhai Sahib was uneducated in the worldly education and helped his father in their farms.

 

After the attack on Sri Harimandir Sahib in June 1984, Bhai Sahib’s area became a stronghold of Jhujaru Singhs who were fighting for the Sikh homeland, Khalistan. The Jhujaru Singhs had set up bases all around the Mand area, and due to this stronghold of the Jhujaru Singhs, the Indian security forces stayed away from Mand in fear of their lives. Almost all Jhujaru groups had bases in the Mand area. Bhai Sahib was deeply connected to the Sikh faith and due to being a brave courageous soul, he also felt connected to the Sikh freedom movement. Bhai Sahib started meeting the Jhujaru Singhs and providing food and shelter to them. Now Bhai Sahib had come onto the Punjab police radar, the police would randomly raid the family house and harass Bhai Sahib and family members. The police also on many occasions would break family’s furniture and leave.

 

Fed up of the continuous harassment of the Punjab police, Bhai Sahib left home and started doing Jhujaru actions under the command of Bhai Lakha Singh (village Harike) of Babbar Khalsa. Bhai Sahib was well respected for his love for the Sikh faith, bravery and honesty. Bhai Sahib never return home once he had jumped into the battlefield against the Indian security forces. The family had sent many messages to Bhai Sahib to return home, but Bhai Sahib would always have one answer, “I will only return home once the chains of Indian slavery are demolished and a Sikh homeland is created.” The family also sent messages to assure Bhai Sahib that the police will not do anything to him he surrenders himself, but Bhai Sahib’s reply to this was, “Bapu Ji, we have no reason to surrender to this tyrant government. The Sikh youth of Punjab are fighting the battle Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwala had started, the battle of Khalistan. By sitting at home, we will not achieve Khalistan, we have to give martyrdom to achieve a Sikh homeland.”

 

On 7th July 1991, Bhai Sahib staying at a hideout in the Sadon village near Patti. This information was given to the local police station by someone. The following morning at 8am (8th July 1991), Indian security forces surrounded the village, Bhai Sahib was arrested as he tried to escape. Bhai Sahib was taken to the Harike police station and mercilessly tortured and once no information was obtained from him, the police staged a fake encounter making Bhai Amarjit Singh Amba a martyr of Khalistan near Valtoha. The police cremated the Bhai Sahib’s body in Patti.
