Bhai Ajit Singh was born from the blessed of Mata Kartar Kaur and in the house of Sardar Karam Singh in the village Dhadiala Natt, district Batala. Bhai Sahib was the youngest of 4 brothers. Sardar Karam Singh was a farmer. Bhai Sahib studied upto 10th class at a school in Shankarpura, and always exceeded his expected grades in education. Bhai Sahib may have been young but he was very tall and a good-looking young man. Then in 1984, Bhai Sahib had completed his 10th class and enrolled for his 11th class in Batala. But after the attack of Sri Dardar Sahib in June 1984, Bhai Sahib stopped studying.

 

The killing of innocent Sikh pilgrims and the desecration of Sri Akaal Takht Sahib during the attack on June 1984, had a deep impact on Bhai Sahib, he had decided that he will dedicate remainder of his life to the cause of Khalistan and break the chains of Indian slavery once and for all. Bhai Sahib discreetly established a contact with Bhai Kanwaljit Singh Kamba (village Haruwal, Dera Baba Nanak) and in November 1984, Bhai Sahib left home and crossed the border into Pakistan with Bhai Kamba. Bhai Sahib stayed in Pakistan for 2 years and obtained guerrilla warfare training and then returned back home.

 

Bhai Sahib was the youngest son in the family and loved by all also. Mata Kartar Kaur was very attached to her younger son and even after Bhai Sahib’s martyrdom, she still misses him deeply. When Bhai Sahib returned back from Pakistan, the family tried their best to stop Bhai Sahib from joining the Jhujaru Singhs, they had even sent Bhai Sahib to Bombay hoping to divert his attention away from the Jhujaru life. Bhai Sahib soon came back from Bombay without telling his family and straight away joined his Jhujaru brothers on the battlefield.

 

On the night of 14th November 1986, Bhai Sahib along with Bhai Hardyal Singh (village Jorh Singh, Batala) and another 2 Jhujaru Singhs were travelling by foot through village Taragarh, near Dera Baba Nanak Road, Batala. All the Jhujaru Singhs were armed at this point. Villages of Punjab were Katak Puranmashi during these days in memory of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj and all of the villages were well lit. An informant had given the location of the Jhujaru Singhs to the local police station who were waiting for the Jhujaru Singhs near the river of Taragarh village. When Bhai Sahib along with his Jhujaru brothers reached the river, the police force opened fire on them. Soon as the Jhujaru Singhs heard the bullets, they got into positions to fight back. Bhai Sahib told his Jhujaru brothers to move back and escape, meanwhile he himself moved forward battling the Indian security forces. It was on the bridge of the river where Bhai Sahib attained martyrdom. Now the police started chasing the other Jhujaru Singhs, they had taken positions in the sugar cane fields of Jorh Singh village. The Indian security forces had surrounded the remaining Jhujaru Singhs and a fierce battle ensued. Bhai Hardyal Singh of Jorh Singh village along with 2 other Jhujaru Singhs attained martyrdom in this battle also.
