Case of Bibi Rajinder Kaur
Case of Bibi Rajinder Kaur
Bhai Rajinder Kaur from Ludhiana, Punjab was arrested by the Punjab police in 1989. The police officers tortured Bibi Rajinder Kaur to get information on the whereabouts of her husband, Bhai Jarnail Singh. She was released after blind torture of the Punjab police.
A month (4 weeks) after the release of Bibi Rajinder Kaur, she was once again taken to the police station where there was a dead body of a singh lying in the yard of the police station. Then SP Sumedh Saini ordered Bibi Rajinder Kaur to identify the body. Looking at the body of this dead singh, Bibi Rajinder Kaur recongnised the body and started crying because it was the body of her husband, Bhai Jarnail Singh. SP Sumedh Saini should no respect and instead showed her a shoe and told her to strike her dead husband with it. Bibi Rajinder Kaur refused, which resulted in the police beating her brutally.
Bibi Rajinder Kaur once again faced brutal torture of the Punjab police and after her release, she was unable to work or move for 3 months due to the ill-treatment of the Punjab police. At the time of the torture Bibi Rajinder Kaur was 4 months pregnant. Eventually when she did give birth to her son, he was severely disabled and mentally handicapped. The joints of Bibi Rajinder Kaur’s son did not work as it would on a normal child.
Bibi Rajinder Kaur made the decision not to remarry and chose to devote all her time and attention to her disabled and mentally handicapped son. Even with the financial help from some Human Rights groups and the Sikh community in United Kingdom, Bibi Rajinder Kaur’s son died in the beginning of 1998.
