Assassination of DSP Sharma

 

On 4th April 1984, Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale challenged the hooliganism of Shiv Sena, he assigned Bhai Gurjit Singh, Bhai Gurdev Singh Usmanwala, Bhai Harbhajan Singh Mand and Bhai Balwinder Singh Berianwala to teach Shiv Sena a lesson at the Loon Mandi in Ferozepur City. There was a fierce fight between the Singhs and the racist Hindu yobs in Loon Mandi. Shiv Sena ran into a Mandir as 13 of them were injured by Singhs. A curfew remained in Ferozepur City for ten days after. Public started to gather, Sikh congregations from surrounding villages had started coming too. Bhupinder, the president of Shiv Sena’s Ferozepur unit, had thrown bricks and stones towards the Khalsa Gurdwara. At that time Singhs was at Baghdadi Gate protesting. After a few days, the Singhs managed to capture Bhupinder and give him a good beating. The Hindu organisations of Ferozepur together brought in the CRPF’s DSP Jatana. This DSP took 13 Nihang Singhs off from the bus at Ferozepur Chowk and killed them in broad daylight. This DSP was given a lot of money by the Hindu organisations of Ferozepur at that time.

 

In a similar way, DSP Dev Raj Sharma of Central Reserve Police Force was positioned in Marhi Menghe during 1987-88, he was openly beating young Sikh men in villages near Marhi Menghe. Whichever Sikh youth DSP Sharma saw on the road in the evening, he would have them pinned down and then he would drive his police Gypsy over their legs. Poor people who were trying to earn a living, DSP Sharma would use their vulnerability by giving them money to do wrong things with their daughters-in-law and daughters. This man in the Khaki police uniform was an evil man.

 

Once in 1987/88, on the outskirts of Marhi Menghe, DSP Sharma beat up a Gursikh family in their house. He would mock this family and say, “Your Guru Gobind Singh, who has a hawk, now I will see how you believe in him.” He also Gurdwara Sahibs from using their speakers at Amrit Vela. The Mata Ji from the Gursikh family met the local Jhujaru Singhs and told them everything and how this DSP is challenging the 10th Guru of the Sikhs. Mata Ji told the Jhujaru Singhs to punish this evil DSP, and install fear into the racist Hindu organisations. Jhujaru Singhs assured Mata Ji, that they will punish him.

 

At that time, new weapons had arrived in Punjab and Jhujaru Singhs were using them for actions. For 4/5 days, the Singhs kept following DSP Sharma but could not find a good timing to carry out the assassination. Then one day all the Singhs came together and did an Ardas in the feet of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, for guidance on their path to punish the anti-Sikh elements.

 

The on one early morning at 3am, the Jhujaru Singhs took their positions on the main crossroad turning towards Marhi Menghe. CRPF’s DSP Sharma, drunk with alcohol, was coming in his police gypsy with his search lights on. When he was at a distance of 20 yards, the Jhujaru Singhs opened fire. There was indiscriminate firing. CRPF soldiers were not given a chance to respond. The whole police gypsy was scattered. The Singhs had eliminated one of the most evil men in Punjab police along with his CRPF soldiers. Sweets was distributed in the nearby villages and celebrations were held.
