Bhai Lakhwinder Singh Lakha

As I was travelling on my motorcycle to see the family of Bhai Lakhwinder Singh, my colleague said, "Brother, half of the panth doesn't even probably know that Bhai Lakhwinder Singh Lakha, Bhai Shamsher Singh Shere and Bhai Gurmeet Singh Engineer were part of the team that killed Butcher Beanta, the Chief Minister of Punjab. The panth only know about Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana. Even about Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, the world got to know about him through the death sentence issue."

We spoke to Bhai Sahib's sister, Bibi Sukhwinder Kaur for almost 2-2 and a half hours. When she gave us a photo of Bhai Sahib, in which he had tied a sky blue turban and was wearing a white kurta pyjama, it seemed as though Bhai Sahib was asking us a question through the photo:

"Do you know who I am? The panth does not remember their eldest brother, Bhai Jeta Ji, who bought the head of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji from Delhi to Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Anandpur. Who knows that at that time Guru Gobind Singh Ji made Bhai Jeta Ji his first son, before the Sahibzaday. The Sikhs don't remember Bhai Jeta Ji, then why should I expect the Sikhs to remember me? We walk on the footsteps of Bhai Jeta Ji, just like Bhai Beant Singh, Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh did to punish the witch, Indira Gandhi. I also fulfilled my responsibility. If you have forgotten me then that is your choice, but whenever the panth needs me, I will never back down. The guru who gave me the Sikhi and made me brave, it is my duty to serve and protect the Sikhi of that guru."

In the Ludhiana district the village of Narangwal is very well known. Next to Narangwal is Narangwal Khurd where in the house of Sardar Darshan Singh and from the womb of Mata Harjit Kaur a son took birth on 9th September 1972, who was named Lakhwinder Singh. Bhai Sahib had two sisters, Bibi Sukhwinder Kaur and Bibi Paramjit Kaur, Bhai Sahib also had one brother, Bhai Hardev Singh. As Bhai Sahib's father worked in Punjab police, the mother mostly the bought the children up. Up until 8th class Bhai Sahib studied at the local school of the village, but then the whole family moved to Patiala as Bhai Sahib's father was transferred to Bahadurgarh police station. The family started living in Guru Nanak Colony, street number 9 and house number 156. Bhai Dilawar Singh, the son of Sardar Harnek Singh and Mata Surjit Kaur also lived in the same area, street number 12 and house number 1223. Bhai Dilawar Singh studied at Multi-purpose school. Bhai Sahib was also put in this school and both singhs became good friends.

As well as being a good basket player, Bhai Sahib was also a polite youngster. Bhai Sahib was multi-talented and his friends use tell Bhai Sahib to go to Bombay and became an actor in the Bollywood industry, Bhai Sahib would always laugh this compliment off. After passing 12th class in 1992, Bhai Sahib joined the Punjab police. 25th February 1992, Butcher Beanta was elected as the Chief Minister with 10% of votes. Under the Butcher Beanta's regime, innocent Sikh youth were being hunted and killed daily, Punjab had turned into a slaughter house. Sikh women were being raped in police stations, all this had an deep impact on Bhai Sahib. Bhai Sahib saw the khaki uniform that was worn to protect the public was in fact killing the public and had become the uniform of a gangster. The police officers use to say that if Butcher Beanta stays in power then there will be no turbaned Sikhs left in Punjab. The Sikh parents were telling their children to cut their hair in order to stay safe and alive. The police officers were also sons of Sikhs, but had become mass murders for the greed of medals and high ranks. The newspapers of that time only stated, 16 Sikh youths have been killed today or today 20 Sikh youths have been killed, etc.

31st October 1993, Sri Akaal Takht Sahib was to hold the bhog of Sri Akhand Paath Sahib in memory of Bhai Beant Singh, Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh. At this moment KPS Gill under the command of CM Butcher Beanta, forcefully occupied Sri Harimandir Sahib complex. The police could be seen all over the Parikarma and inside the Sri Akaal Takht Sahib. An officer by the name of Gurinder Dhillon was treating the sangat in a disrespectful manner, he even spoke to Jathedar Manjit Singh with dirty words. This was the message to Sikhs that the Sikh throne, Sri Akaal Takht Sahib is under the control of the Indian Delhi throne. The Indian government thought that CM Butcher Beanta has killed all the Khalistani Sikhs and they have won the battle.

After this act of Punjab police the whole Sikh nation felt the anger towards the Indian government. Then again on 19th September 1993, the Punjab police stopped the Sri Akhand Paath Sahib in the village of Gujranwala, district Ludhiana. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was also destroyed by the police. Gujranwala village also close to Narangwal, in fact the village of Rajoana is also near Narangwal. These actions of the Punjab police had a sharp effect on Bhai Sahib. Tornadoes were taking place inside the polite Bhai Sahib, who might not have had hair on his face or on the head due to working as a police officer. Bhai Sahib always fulfilled his duty with full honesty and bravery, but the reality was that Bhai Sahib was shocked to see the injustice of the justice system in India. Bhai Sahib very well knew that it may be the police officers that are responsible for the killing of many innocent Sikhs, but the orders came from KPS Gill and Butcher Beanta. Bhai Sahib could never have guessed that he would be part of the team that would punish the killer of many innocent Sikhs, CM Butcher Beanta.

Bhai Sahib was living in rented house in Chandigarh. Now Bhai Sahib's duty was to refuel the VIP cars in the Secretariat. On 31st July 1995, things were said that put salt on the wounds of Sikhs. In a conference in Raipura, the congress leaders labelled CM Butcher Beanta as the reincarnation of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji, this compliment of the congress party went to the head of Butcher Beant and he started to really belive that he was the reincarnation of god. There were the days when the Sikh youth of Patiala was becoming aware of Butcher Beanta's anti-Sikh agenda. Bhai Gurmeet Singh Engineer was originally from the Guru Nanak Colony, Patiala but now had been living in Mohali in a rented house in Phase 4, house number 981, as he worked in the BPL company. Bhai Sahib also would regularly be visited by Bhai Dilawar Singh and soon the duo met Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana. Another base of these Singh's was created in Uttar Pardesh, village Ratoli, here the singhs of Guru Gobind Singh Ji rented a house and would hold secret meetings to plan the mission on how to kill CM Butcher Beanta. Soon the Singhs were introduced to Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara of Babbar Khalsa and the planning was now moving forward faster.

According to the plan the singhs bought a 1970 model of Ambassador Car, DBA1517 from Delhi for 32,000 rupees and then the Singh's bought the car back to Chandigarh by Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Bhai Paramjit Singh Bheora. The number plate of this car was changed to DBA9598, then on 26th August 1995, Bhai Sahib took the car to sector 7 of Chandigarh to have the car painted white and then on 30th August 1995, the car was picked by Bhai Sahib, the car now looked like a VIP car. Bhai Sahib went to the Chandigarh Secretariat on a scooter, PCP2085. Bhai Dilawar Singh, Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and another singh were to come Secretariat in the car, but Bhai Sahib sent a message informing the Singh's that Butcher Beanta was not at the Secretariat and that the mission cannot be carried out today. On 31st August 1995, Butcher Beanta was in the Secretariat of Chandigarh. Bhai Sahib had gained the trust of the workers at the Secretariat through his job and was able to take anyone inside the Secretariat with him. Bhai Sahib took Bhai Dilawar Singh and Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana into the Secretariat. Bhai Sahib had done his part of the mission.

It was 5 o'clock in the evening of 31st August 1995, the death had arrived at the Secretariat to stop the Butcher Beanta from killing any more innocent Sikhs. As Butcher Beanta walked up to the parked car in the porch of the Secretariat, Bhai Dilawar Singh detonated the bomb that he had strapped to himself and blew Butcher Beanta along with 18 others into pieces. The bomb explosion shook the walls of the Secretariat of Chandigarh. The self-claimed god had been punished by the singhs of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Butcher Beanta had recently had a Hernia operation and was identified dead after the police found his fake teeth and the stitches from the Hernia operation. The clock of the neighbouring state bank had stopped on 5.13pm, which was the exact time of the explosion.

On the 3rd day from when Butcher Beanta was blown in to pieces, the photo of the car the Singh's bought from Delhi was printed on all national newspapers, as it was abandoned in the Secretariat. The painter, who had painted the car, went to the police on his own will and told the police that Bhai Sahib had given the car to him to be painted white. The painter knew Bhai Sahib was police officer and worked at the Secretariat. From this lead the police arrested Bhai Sahib from the village of Kansal and later arrested Bhai Gurmeet Singh Engineer from Mohali.

5th September 1995, after the arrest of these singhs in connection with the assassination of Butcher Beanta, the public was shocked to find out that the singhs had carried out this action and wanted the full detail of this mission. On 6th September 1995, the police announced the reward of 3 lakh rupees for the capture of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana. By January 1996, the police had arrested many Singh's in relation with the assassination of Butcher Beanta. The CBI was handed this case and about 9 Singh's were charged in this case. These nine singhs included names such as Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara, Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara, Bhai Paramjit Singh Bheora, Bhai Lakhwinder Singh Lakha, Bhai Shamsher Singh Shere, Bhai Gurmeet Singh Engineer, Bhai Naseeb Singh, Bhai Navjot Singh and these singhs were said to gone into hiding, Bhai Wadhawa Singh Babbar, Bhai Mahal Singh Babbar, Bhai Jagroop Singh, Bhai Harjit Singh Latala, Bhai Manjinder Singh Grewal and Bhai Resham Singh Babbar.

On 31st July 2007, the decision was made regarding this case. Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana were given the death sentence. Bhai Sahib, Bhai Shamsher Singh Shere and Bhai Gurmeet Singh Engineer were given the life sentences. In many cases a life sentence is about 12-14 years in jail and the inmates get 2 holidays a year, but in the case of these singhs it has been almost 18 years in jail with no holidays, beside Bhai Shamsher Singh Shere being released for two days to attend the wedding of his daughter.
